Well Jeremy Clarkson says he's sent loads over to Europe, carried by Drones, from the cliffs of Eastbourne, so they must work!

My stepdaughters ex boyfriend has one and he's impressed with it, apparently you just plug in to the socket on your tv, follow a few simple commands and away you go

Do you need internet for them? What channels are available?

Yes you need broadband - a good connection 6mb at least. Unlimited broadband is best as streaming uses date allowance. Channels depends on if its just basic Fire Stick or preloaded with Kodi then you get movies, sports etc

Hi jbeckybo. I have a Kodi-loaded firestick in the UK, can I take it with me and use it the same way in Spain?

Provided you have a VPN loaded then yes otherwise catch-up, like BBC iPlayer, will tell you it's not available outside UK. Plus, Amazon are working on a way to block kodi loaded firesticks from working. Our TV Tech will probably be able to explain more. I brought a non-kodi firestick over and it wouldn't pick up anything not available on the internet anyway and some of the good stuff was subscription only which wouldn't allow me to subscribe outside the UK.
My smart TV does everything the Firestick can do with the same restrictions.

I am planning on downloading smartDNS or similar on our netbook but I dont think you can add that or a VPN for that matter to a non-smart tv.

I am hoping to run the tv using IPTV as I dont want a huge dish, so I am willing to pay for a better internet connection, but I am reluctant to pay more than necessary for tv (especially as I rarely watch it but the oh does :D ). I might try the firestick until Amazon block it.
