Pete do you not have iCloud if you sign into iCloud with your email or lost password and gmail has a recovery option when you sign up you should always sign up to this has a alternative options ie phone number or email mate I had the same problem with hotmail and it’s probably a expert help and with all security issues it won’t be easy mate or you could email Apple they will help where possible

I also use Hotmail, so here is a possible route to go.
When you set up your Hotmail account you may have entered an alternative email address for them to contact you in case of issues getting into your account.
If you go to login to your Hotmail account and select the "Forgot My Password" option it takes you through a few screens and will present you with options for recovering your password. If you did set up an alternative email address it will be listed there with a few asterisks masking part of the email address. If the alternate email address is there and you still have access to your alternative email address mailbox, then they can email you there with instructions for resetting your password.
If you didn't set up an alternate email address, then select "I don't have any" when it asks you which option to contact you on. Eventually it will ask you for an email address where they can contact you and suggests if you don't have one create a new Hotmail account. If you do that, you can tie your new hotmail account to your new phones details, and you will hopefully then be able to contact Hotmail directly via your new account and get everything sorted.
