UNABLE TO UPDATE WINDOWS DEFENDER

Some help advice please

I have a HP laptop running windows 8.1.

I have just noticed that the Windows Defender definitions have not been updated for several months!

I have tried to update the definitions but keep getting the message ' DID NOT UPDATE BECAUSE OF INTERNET OR NETWORK CONNECTIONS'

I have hard wired the laptop to the router but still get the same message. I am able to use the WIFI / Internet for other things albeit with some interruptions.

Any advice / guidance gratefully received

Thanks

My advice is to update the O/S to Windows 10 Defender is not behaving well on Windows 8.1
If you download from here you will get a free update if your 8.1 is genuine as it will use the product code from the motherboard You should do this as 8.1 is way out of date now
I you are stuck PM me and I will help

jpeg Thanks for the quick reply - I do have a genuine version of Windows 8.1

In your reply you said If you download from here you will get a free update - did you mean to put in a link?

Thanks

Again many thanks. Just tried to run the programme and got the message
8 GB OF FREE SPACE NEEDED ON C DRIVE - REMOVE FILES THAT YOU NO LONGER NEED OR CREATE SPACE

Just looked at the properties for my C drive - it's capacity is 21.4GB but I only have 366 mb free!
I have run disk clean up - emptied folders - emptied pictures / download etc folders on the C drive. Am reluctant to go and delete other files or programmes as I am not sure of the knock on effect / consequences. Any ideas please or do I need to take the laptop to a laptop repair shop?

Thanks

Is this some sort of netbook with a small SSD drive?
If not, then unless the HDD has been swapped-out for a smaller one in the past, it’s likley that it’s quite an old laptop and probably time for an upgrade.

Pete.

Hi Pete

It's a HP Stream Notebook PC 13 - it's only about 3 years old - I always thought 21.4 GB hard drive was a reasonable size?

I use 2TB in my laptop you really need a new drive I would say, the Stream is more of a Netbook but quite a good one and it should have a 32gb hard drive installed

I was wondering if that that might be the case when I saw the lack of available space on the C drive. - do you know if I can increase the size of drive fairly easily on this stream notebook?
