Sky TV over the internet

Hi, just thought I would post a quick message about my recent experience with trying to get TV over the internet.

Our internet is provided by DVBLab in Benijofar. Very happy with their service and internet speed.

From phone or laptop you can watch programmes from youtube or easyview.eu. You tube is limited on TV content and easyview seems unreliable and has a lot of adverts.

Back in the UK we have a Sky subscription and have only just discovered SkyGo (mainly because our internet in the UK is terrible). By installing the SkyGo app on your phone or laptop you can watch Sky live on the channels you subscribe to. It works well, but I didn't really want to watch Sky on a phone or laptop so was trying to connect it up to a TV.

I brought a cable that connected my iphone to the HDMI port on the TV. This allows you to see your phone screen on your TV so its great for watching youtube, reading emails, or internet. But the SkyGo app wont let you play through this cable.

With the laptop you can connect VGA or HDMI cable to TV and watch SkyGo with no problems but a bit of a pain having laptop and cables hanging around by the TV.

I then read you could connect a games console (XBOX, PS) to SkyGo and watch through the console. We had an old XBOX 360 which we took over and hooked up. After more reading, and trial and error, I found that you actually needed SkyGo Extra to get Sky working on a games console which was £5 a month extra on your Sky subscription.

But now its all hooked up and working well, for an extra £5 a month on our Sky we have the full Sky package available in Spain.

Hi Scott,

Interesting - though specifically relevant to those who live in the UK with Sky, but come over to Spain. Not for residents (or those who don't have official UK Sky already) - although there are other options for residents.

I believe that this will work for only a month - as was advised that this is a noted 'holiday' type service & the system needs to see a UK internet connection after 30 days. If it does not, they then believe you may be full time in Spain or passing subscription to another, service will stop. I cannot verify this 100% myself as do not have Sky Go - but I have seen it reported elsewhere, that you can use - but not for more than a month. Mind you, you could also get around this with a VPN router - but then we add more costs.

Certainly, for a holiday visit for those who already have Sky in the UK, this seems to offer a temporary and cost-effective solution.

Yep you are correct Paul. Only really an option for those folk who have a holiday home in Spain with a Sky subscription in the UK.

Your Sky Go will show that you are watching outside of the UK as mine was two months ago, my wife who was in the UK had to use the app to allow it to be used by myself in Spain.
IPTV is the way forward.

Yes, I have Sky Multiroom box from UK, which is from my parents house who have a UK contract - I just pay the top up extra. So a family member who already has UK Sky, is one way forward, IF you have friend or family that will let someone install another box in the UK, then can bring out here. Need 1.4 metre dish minimum locally.

IPTV option, different - cheaper, quality slightly less than satellite - but costs less, there are other options 'over and above' Sky in content terms & you get the catch up services (or can get), which you can't easily get in Spain with the Sky boxes, as they geoblock content & will not allow the online services such as catch up or on-demand content - unless you have a VPN router, which is yet another cost. Other than that the Sky boxes will record as per the UK (with 2 satellite feeds), you just can't use the online features.

Why not bring the Sky box over and connect it to a dish ? We have used Sky here for 12 years without a problem. That people that tell you that they will turn you off if they know you are in Spain is a fallacy, I have phoned them many times to sort out my subscription with my Spanish landline and even told them that I am in Spain, no problem they just want your money !

Yes, I have had a Sky box in Spain for a few years now, with subscription - is no issue. Though I have been a little more cautious in pairing the card to the box, used my folks in the UK to sort, as I have heard people getting switched off or billed for a full second subscription! Never happened to me - but have heard it happen to some before. I think you need to be a little lucky who you speak with, as if you get a 'jobs worth' and they know you are in Spain, they may well do something about it?

Hi we have used a sky box over here for 10 years now. No subscription or card. Only get the free to air channels which are enough for us. If we want to watch sky sports or a movie use Mobdro over the Internet. Not always 100℅ but free.

Hi Paul
Any issues using Amazon fire tv in Spain? Amazon have said you can use the stick on holiday in Spain but wondering if there is a cut-off point (i.e. monthly usage)
We have UK subscription.
