Wimax from Telfy

Looks as though I have very limited broadband options for my road in Quesada and its satellite via Telfy.

Does anyone here use this regularly/high usage? I need a decent connection for work purposes and it would also be nice to be able to stream some TV of an evening.

For those who use Wimax, I wondered if you had any real world feedback outside of the assurances of Telfy's office...

1. Is the connection reliable?
2. Does the connection perform to the advertised download speeds?
3. Does the connection "peak and trough" at different periods through the day due to increased multiple users? Similarly does summer bring about a reduction in speed when the area is more densely populated?
4. If you are a heavy user does your speed then get throttled by the service provider?
5. Is there a cap on daily/weekly/monthly usage?

Many thanks all.

I don't know about Telfy but we've had Wimax via Telecable for about 3 years.

We're out in Spain for about 5 or 6 months a year and we've only experienced a couple of failures so far (power outage). We do have the option of switching the service off when in the UK but we leave it on as we have IP security cameras at the property.

We're contracted for 8 MB/s and usually get 9 to 11 MB/s (1 to 2 MB/s upload) but very occasionally it has gone as low as 6 or 7 MB/s. I would say that we're heavy users as we download films and use the WiFi for TV. I haven't noticed the service being throttled by the ISP and there's no cap on monthly usage. We're very happy with the service but I guess it depends on your location. We've recently had fibre installed in our village and people have signed up for this service which means fewer people using Wimax.

Very helpful Paul. Sounds as though satellite connection has come on in the last few years. When I heard the words it filled me with dread!

Like you, there is to be IP cameras so would leave the connection year round and to be honest if it did suffer an outage it would be useful that I knew in advance via the cameras going down or whatever before I landed back in Spain only to find myself contactless with the internet for work.

Thanks for your input.

We had the Wi Max from Telfy - worked ok most of the time. The only thing with this type of system (we have technicians that installed for Telitec) is that the performance can vary depending what location you are in & how far you are from the main transmission antenna. As long as not too far and not near the top of Quesada where there can be some troublesome interference - you should be ok. Telfy as a company decent enough to deal with.

Telfy/WiMax is not satellite based - it uses small dishes which point to a terrestrial mast usually within a 5km radius. Satellite internet, is a different (and more expensive) game https://www.skydsl.eu/en-ES/Personal/Sa ... e/Overview

Thanks Paul. Again, very useful.

It's a bit daunting to take the leap of faith the internet will be "ok" when it is such a necessity for me to be able to enjoy the Spanish pad. However, seems like I can only canvas opinion and take that jump with as much research as possible...

I think legally you have a couple of weeks to reject deal if service not up to par.

Our technicians when installing these type of systems, knew during the install if there was a problem - as impossible to see beforehand. Only (rarely) when they went to install and found an issue AT THE TIME with signal strength or interference, then would advise client and install would not go ahead - so I don't think you have anything to worry about - you won't get tied into something if not working. Also for reference the contracts many companies give you are not worth the paper they are written on (IE not legally binding), so if they give you poor service, and it's later on, you can give them notice and stop the direct debits.

we used telfy and so far have had no complaints with computer or tv they had to dig outside as they couldn't get the wire though they said it would be 50 euro to fix and the workman was there from morning to night fixing the problem they still only charged what they said even though it turned out to be a bigger job than they thought.
always helpful on phone when need to speak to them

Thanks again Paul. I guess my concern about "leap of faith" was also that decent internet can be provided to the house at all, not just the Wimax one. If I cannot get decent internet, I cannot work from there. And if I cannot work from there, I cannot be there for any more than a few weeks of the year. Overly paranoid perhaps and it feels horrible to be so reliant on a bloody internet connection! If it was TV streaming or browsing the net, I wouldn't give too much of a damn and it might be a blessing in disguise! However, sadly retirement is many years away still so a good quality net connection is vital.

I do understand as often work from home. We have Telfy fibre which is ok most of the time, but because like you I am paranoid - I have to be as cannot afford to be without internet connection, we also have 4G router with 25GB from Yoigo and even as a back up to a back up - and when working even more remotely 25GB data on my Yoigo phone sim, which has allowed me to work anywhere with 4G connection and pair laptop/tablet to phone. So 3 internet connections to make sure 100% coverage. Probably too much, but we've had problems in the past, so being probably a little too cautious. 4G data 25gb with router was €30 per month.

Can you not contact Telfy in advance with location and confirm fibre or otherwise? Most are covered in Quesada now.
