Freesat EPG

Maybe an odd one but:

If I use my Humax for Freesat, when using the electronic programme guide (EPG) I get a picture of the channel in the left hand top corner plus the audio of that channel continues to come through.
This also works on the Spanish TDT (like Freeview).

However, I have the satellite plugged directly to the TV on the satellite connector (the picture is far superior to the one on Humax) and I don't get either the audio or the picture in the top left hand corner of the EPG.

If I go to satellite instead of Freesat I do get the picture and the audio but the channels are not logical (eg, BBC1 is on channel 78 and ITV on channel 1 etc) and pick up all the dross that I can't get (like Discovery).

I have tried re-tuning Freesat and played around with all the options in the menu but going into EPG on Freesat into the TV (A Samsung smart TV) the sound and the picture disappears.

Anyone any idea on how I can the previews and the audio?

Yes. I get the regional ITV and BBC bit but as soon as I go the EPG the sound disappears and no window for the channel I was originally on comes up on Freesat. It does if I use Humax, Spanish TV or satellite (all channels).
May be just a thing with Freesat.

This sounds like 2 diffent points of hardware.

1. Freesat box (official)
2. The TV satellite tuner - (IE plug straight into the TV).

Humax or official UK Freesat boxes have a weekly program guide / EPG. As do Sky UK boxes.

Any other satellite receiver or standard DVBS-2 satellite tuner within a TV purchased locally, is not Freesat, it does pick up the satellite channels - but Freesat is a UK brand specifically relating to the EPG. Any Euro receiver or tuner (stand alone or built into the TV) does not have the full guide - usually just now and next.

The audio issue, is something 'not playing nice' in the setup as should not be the case - but can be variables in hardware or specific models, or even how the audio output has been specifically set.

In theory - the picture coming out of the Humax should not be inferior to the TV picture with the inbuilt tuner, so this could indicate how you are plugged into the TV - for example if you have the Humax connected via SCART - a 25 year old cable design which will not pass HD properly - you have your answer. If HD and connected via HDMI, then picture quality should be all but identical unless some odd setting or the box simply is not performing correctly. Generally Humax is rated quite highly.

I am not 100% sure that somewhere the two different devices - Humax Freesat and the TV's tuner, aren't being mixed in the description or usage itself - which is where some of the confusion may be?

Possibly worth a mention, that some Humax boxes are twin tuner, and need 2 cables to connect to. If you have this type of box, but only have one cable connected, this also would cause the odd box issue.

Sorry but not much in that is right in my case.
I was using a Humax box, not a Spanish one. The picture from Humax is inferior as it is HD whereas the Smart TV tuner is far clearer and crisper with a lot more depth. Pointless really getting a 4K UHD TV if you just get HD (I know, not many channels in UHD but the upscaling on the Samsung is brilliant and improves the picture no end).

Yes, I get a 7 day EPG on both the Humax and the TV satellite connection (Humax connected with HDMI by the way) although the Humax one is far superior.

Both have the Freesat logo on the EPG.
It's just that the Samsung puts up the EPG on Freesat but cuts out the audio and the picture on the top left.
The satellite on non Freesat does give both the audio and the picture but brings in every channel and not in the correct order (all the Sky ones, for example). I also get the audio and the picture on Spanish TDT.

Anyhoo......I've looked it up and find that this a Freesat thing. Appears many people complaining they lose this facility on LG and Samsung (among others) when connecting directly to the sat tuner.

Hi Marcliff,
Sorry I can't help on your issue, but nevertheless found your post interesting - specifically the fact that you have a sat connection on your TV.

I recently bought my first smart TV in the UK. It's a Toshiba which was cut price in Tesco. Seems to have even more bells and whistles than advertised, including a satellite connection which I haven't tried yet.

If I understand you correctly, your Humax box is Freesat whilst your direct TV connection is generic Free to Air ?
As far as EPG is concerned, are FTA boxes always limited to current and next programme ?

As a general point, I get the impression that some manufacturers offload discontinued items cheap and then don't support them. My all singing Toshiba TV pulled in one software update the day I installed it about 5 months ago and nothing since.
I would have thought that smart TVs in particular should be updated fairly regularly. I say this because it's got an HDMI sound issue (get-roundable) that smacks of a software bug. Maybe the same applies to your EPG issue.

Not quite. Again, loads of bells and whistles but you can choose between satellite channels (all of them) or just Freesat.
The EPG on both the Freesat option and the satellite option (which brings in all the channels whether FTA or not but you get a "no card inserted" if you try one with a box next to it) have a 7 day programme guide.

My TV is set up to take automatic software updates.

Simply plug in the satellite connection and ask for a scan and it asks you to choose between Freesat or all satellite channels. First time I just chose freesat and it came in perfectly. Next time I chose all satellite channels and it gave me different satellites to choose from. Once I did that I can now choose between Freesat only or all channels but the all channels have the order rather weird, such as 1 is ITV, 2 is ITV2 and 3 is CITV. You have to go to Ch 76 to get to BBC1 hence we only use the freesat option.

Good thing is I could add a UK postcode to get Freesat regional ones but I could put in a Spanish postcode on the TDT bit.

Add on the fact I can give verbal commands to change channels, increase volume, turn off and many other things and I really think I have stepped into a new future.
Ah, the days of 2 channels and walking over to the TV to change the channel seem a distant memory.
Oh, and I use a soundbar for the audio as I find the TV speakers very tinny no matter how much you tweak them.
