Good day,
I'm after some information hopefully that will enable me and mine to be able to watch some television.
I know all about the various different packages you can get on a monthly contract etc, but being Welsh (notoriously more tight than Scots - no offense to any Scots out here lol), my hubby doesn't want to get into all of that.
He came across a chap selling these Mag250 boxes and he explained how they worked, being plugged into the computer etc. The only thing he mentioned that confused us was about maybe needing a VPN? What is this?
He also explained that it might also depend on our Internet Provider as to whether it would work properly. We've checked our speed etc and it is well capable of handling the information. What I am worried about is whether DVBLAB who are our IP at the moment, can block the use of a set top box like this?
I am not that technically minded tbh, I like to plug something in and be able to just use it lol sso if anyone can offer any insight into this then I would be eternally grateful

They do not need a VPN, nor plugging into a computer. We have clients who have this box & live package which they use not only in Spain, but take with them elsewhere in the world and use.

Unlikely to block service, so as long as speed sufficient / stable, should be o.k.

Mag 250's (and similar, also Mag 254, Blade media are similar) are IPTV boxes designed to work with a service provider. In summary a paid for service, usually monthly or many charge yearly. Without connecting these type of boxes to a hosted service provider, they are nigh on useless (except for youtube and a little web browsing).

Quality of service does vary between providers. We offer this type of hardware with different packages, from economy, to premium channel offerings, including a 'pay as you go' only service requiring a month payment at a time as and when required, with no contract or cancellation.

There is also a subscription free IPTV option, which quality wise are not quite as good for live TV & a more technical to use (not suitable for everyone).

Thank you for your reply Paul - we would certainly be looking at a subscription free option - what would this entail? Our Ip at he moment is dvblab which we pay on a monthly basis. We are not looking for much in the way of tv channels as we are not sport enthusiasts, so no sports channels lol. Just your bog standard channels really. On the original page link on top post, within this are further links to all the other hardware including subscription free, economy based subscription services & flagship IPTV products.

Unlike satellite where the quality of the channels is all the same (original service) between Sky & Free to air / Freesat, it is different with IPTV / internet TV, so worth reading the article on above link as does explain all the pro's & cons of each type of system. There are some major difference in hardware / services with IPTV, so a good idea to make sure you know exactly what you are getting, before spending any money.

For the free to air option, certainly locally - if you have got the option of installing the minimum of a 1.4 metre satellite dish (for free to air channels), this would give you superior quality picture to the equivalent 'subscription free' IPTV service on the UK terrestrial channel - dependent on whether this is viable in your specific location.

But I use it for Movies & TV channels

If you have a satellite dish, all you need for free UK TV is a Freesat Box. If you are lucky enough to have two satellite feeds and a Freesat HDR, you’ll have the luxury of being able to record programmes too.

Hi, I think all these fully loaded boxes with Kodi on are few and far between now lot of hassle in the uk about selling them.

Kodi is not good or stable. We stopped supplying over 2 years ago, due to feedback from many customers and the level of support needed - Plug & Play Not in a million years - it'll work for a couple of days until something trips up - unstable streams, apps chopping and changing every 5 minutes. One day you have a favourite app, next day they have a legal notice and then the search begins again for an alternative - aggravation.

We have Kodi customers contact us all the time asking if there is a solution that works - simply. So, you can do cheap - but there is a point where cheap is too cheap and you just end up spending more time attempting to watch TV, than actually watching it.

Kodi is more home hobbyist or at a pinch as a secondary/back up or something to play with if your technically minded (and have the patience of a saint) - as a main TV service, i've never dealt with such an unstable service in the last 10 years of being in TV/Telecomms. Most of the marketing selling the Kodi boxes and what they are supposed to deliver is optimistic to say the least. Personally, i've given up on even playing with it as don't have the time or patience.

For hosted/subscription IPTV service - Also watch out for those selling MAGs locally - as seems people are still selling the MAG 250 & this model is now over 3 generations old and not being updated by the manufacturer. Latest model is 322, though there are now other boxes which also do a good, IMO a better job.

I think also we have to look at the different demographics of people - those who are 18-40 ish may be ok with more technical IT research type needed for Kodi updates, those a little older or not technically minded (in fairness the average person), simply want to turn on their telly and don't want multiple apps or updates - just want to turn on and use simply - just like a Sky or UK Freesat satellite receiver - but the equivalent with IPTV - Kodi is as far from this in terms of IPTV hardware supplied - certainly not suitable for everyone or remotely simple to use.
