Spam email

I use a Gmail account that I've had for years.

Normally (in the UK) I might receive 6 to 12 spam emails a day.
However this seems to increase significantly when I'm in Spain. Today for instance I've already received 30!

Admittedly I don't understand the technicalities of what causes Spam, but I would be interested if anyone can throw some light on this.

Thanks.

This has nothing to so with Spain or the UK - it is just who has gotten hold of your email details. There´s so many ways this can happen, from you filling out forms on websites, to randomly generated spam emails.

Older the account and the longer your history of signing up for things, more likely spam email.

30 a day is a lot, 12 a day is also quite a lot - sounds like your details been leaked - i´d consider starting a new email address.

Thanks for your reply. I am very much tied into Google with Email, Contacts, Calendar, Drive etc. My account is sync'd across muliple devices inc my laptop in Spain.
I get regular notifications from various websites mostly on my Android device.
That being the case, is it not feasible that my account is quite exposed. On the point of notifications, surely the various websites have my account details ie email address, or is that not the case?

I am heavily reliant on the Google platform, but I'm now wondering if such reliance makes it more likely that my account is exposed?

Google are having huge problems at the moment and Android users are being advised by the technicial websites to get rid of Chrome as it is too open to hackers .Gmail is being affected as well
I have my own domain and use the email address from their it is not expensive to have your own domain look on Fasthosts.co.uk

Thanks jpeg.
I accept that it is a simple procedure to have a domain and email address. However if I ditched Google and Chrome I would lose a lot of advantages related to syncing my devices. If things get worse I may have to consider it.
I assume that receiving a lot of Spam email doesn't necessarily mean my Google account has been hacked (ie password compromised).
I have a very strong password so I hope that's unlikely.

It does not matter how strong password is if the hackers get into Gmail they will get your password very easy

I'd just start with changing of your password on the gmail account - then all of the emails come in which you do not like mark them as spam and hopefully will cut it down.

I've had a personal gmail address for years and no issues - though did have some with spam and hotmail. Even on the work email, which is not reliant on google, still get spam from time to time.

You can always also start a new gmail account, so can still access calendar etc - but see how you do with a password change first as easiest and a bit of spam blocking and see how it goes, if still issues, then new account.
