A Firestick - any, is not as good as a dedicated TV box with the correct software inbuilt. The gulf between these Firesticks and a decent system, is quite far removed.

Firesticks are reliant on 3rd party apps, which are okayish if you're lucky (often buggy and lacking feature sets) - and are far removed from a dedicated set top box, which is designed from the outset for these types of services. Anyone recommending Firesticks as the correct hardware, either do not work in the industry - or they are simply unaware that there are much better options out there.

Firesticks - great for Netflix, Amazon Prime, or recommended services. Step outside of that & they are sub-standard. reliant on secondary apps by small developers. Not saying they do not work - but there is so much better out there. Better features, integration & performance - chalk & cheese.

I don't necessarily disagree with the above comments however there is another factor which cannot be dismissed and that is cost.

A Firestick is a one off expense with the only ongoing commitment being for a VPN.

Most dedicated set top boxes will cost as much as a top end Firestick but then involve as much as €2-300/pa in subscription charges for a service to run on them.

Horses for courses!

As someone who's job it is to test equipment. I can advise of there's little real-world comparison. Cost of equipment aside - if you pay for a service, you can get access to all content, live, sports, catchup, on-demand - the whole lot, integrated on equipment that is designed to do this. Firesticks are not designed for this, so the apps / VPN's tend to be workarounds - having to use different applications to access different content, piecemeal & reliant on small app developers, different services etc.

Also, you can't guarantee any service that isn't being paid for. Not so long ago BBC put in VPN detectors, so many people using a VPN, suddenly had an issue, then had to try other VPN or DNS - technical stuff which many users can't easily do themselves. As with all things, depends on whether you want cheap/short cut or to do the job to best affect on a given budget.

We do get quite a few emails about people with Firesticks with technical issues when trying to use various services - so it may be cheaper, but not without sacrificing content and reliability - it's TV, but not comparing Apples to Apples.

Whilst we can assist people with Firesticks with support, we often find that 'down the line' they tend to upgrade to a simpler solution, that just works and has everything combined in terms of content and overall usage.

Agreed Paul and if I was a Resident I would 100% go for the box. But if you are a non-resident and only in Spain for a short time each year then wouldn't the Firestick with the dodgy app be the most economical.

I don't have one at home Paul. We use Sky and anything else like Prime and the dodgy App is on the Firestick.
