Sounds like I have hit a nerve! Same aggression as shown on the roads.
If you read what I wrote and not what they think I wrote you will see I mention the responsibility of both cyclists and motorists!
Here's why 2 abreast is safest:

Driving from quesada to torre there is a wonderful cycle track planned and built to save cyclist having to compete with traffic hurtling past at 100kph but how many times do you see those Lycra louts in front of you feeling too superior to cycle with mere 'amateurs'
Another sight for sore, tired late night eyes is a guy we see late every Tuesday night on the road from daya Neuva to rojales. He wobbles along with no lights, no visibility vest and no helmet and how he manages to survive amazes me, maybe he's a ghost rider ?

But, that's an English cyclist, writing for a UK publications about riding on British roads.

Different countries adopt different views, codes and laws, navigating roundabouts being one of them

I have to agree with Stephen. My advice to concerned brit drivers is just relax. This is Spain. Cycling is a way of life here, always has been and hopefully always will be as it is good for the body & soul. I guess most of the complaining brit drivers are retired so why get so angst? you have all day to get there and, as the roads are far better than the UK, there will be a passing opportunity any second . Enjoy the life. I am not a cyclist any more so have no prejudice here.
On the same topic when following cyclists pay close attention when driving and you will often see Spanish drivers pull towards the near side to give you more space to overtake the cyclist, Its behaviour worth practising as a driver. Its all about helping each other. Its what the Spanish do.

I too agree with Stephen, riding 2 abreast makes it easier with the snow plough
