HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD A LETTER OFF THEIR BANK REQUESTING THEIR TAX REF. NUMBER FOR SPAIN?. APPARENTLY THEY ARE STARTING TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER IN REGARDS TO TAX RESIDENCY

I received a letter from our bank about 9 months ago. Wanting to know where did I pay my tax and if it was Spain they wanted my N I E number.

We are non-residents and Sabadell recently requested our NI numbers, but we havent had anything from our UK bank requesting NIE's to date. How would they know we have a Spanish bank account?

Yes we are non residents, and don't have any income in Spain

Information such as this is shared between international banking organizations to try to identify and reduce fraud.

Back in the UK, HMRC will also know you have a Spanish bank account and property in Spain, whether you admit it or not!!!

I am not deliberately trying not to tell the bank or HMRC just curious. Sabadell dont know who we bank with in the UK and we dont fill in any UK tax returns. Still it isnt any secret or a problem I just wondered how they would know.
