same here for me , on medication in uk daily,
in spain no problem only occasionaly need lansaporsol,i tend to have one meal daily around midday,if I was to eat late 7pm I would take medication just to be sure of no reflux later,

As it has an alkaline pH, baking soda is a common remedy for the relief of heartburn and acid reflux. It works by neutralizing the excess stomach acid that causes symptoms.
You should take 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate powder mixed with a glass of water before meals and every 2 hours until symptoms go away.
Doctors only recommend using baking soda temporarily, This is because other problems may develop if the body becomes too alkaline but it is great for the kidneys
Use PH strips to monitor your PH leveles

Try all of these:-
Don't drink alcohol
Raise the bed head on blocks
No fizzy drinks at all inc. beer.
Don't eat rich foods(all the tasty foods)
Eat earlier in the evening
Smaller meals
Digest your food slowly
Tea and Coffee agravate the situation
Never lie down after food at least 2 if not 3 hours no late meals
Have regular camera checks you need to see what damage is being done?
Long term meds work but I'll let you read up about those.
The operation is called a Nissen Fundifiplication(spelt wrong)
Makes life boring but I've been there.
Golden rule is get it checked out.

Often the sphincter valve is the problem, because for some people after eating it does not close/seal properly allowing the acid to come back up.
Gaviscon Advance, (unfortunately not sold here, but you could get some if you go back to the UK, or ask somebody to bring some over for you), is amazing for night time reflux, it forms a plug on top of the sphincter valve, it is quite thick and gloopy, but it definitely does what it says on the bottle. I have Barratts and Consultant said this would help to hopefully prevent more damage.
I take Nexium daily and Gaviscon Advance of a night, I don't think the Advance is so useful during the day as you will be eating and drinking at some stage after taking it, but for night time it is the best I have used, I also use a wedge pillow at times.
Gaviscon Advance is not on the shelves in UK you have to go to the Pharmacy counter, but a prescription is not needed.
Good luck, hope you find some relief, as it can be miserable living with this on a daily basis, hopefully you will find something that works for you.

As previous readers have mentioned if you take tablets for acid reflux, etc on a regular basis you should get it checked by a gp and possibly get an endoscopy to make sure nothing sinister is going on. Omeprazole and Nexium belong to the same class of drugs except Nexium (esomeprazole) is a higher dose. Barrett’s can be a precursor to osophageal cancer.
Others have also given good advice re lifestyle changes.
Omeprazole and esomeprazole reduce the amount of acid being produced and Gaviscon acts as a raft.
