I am about to complete on a property purchase and would appreciate some advice on how to stop Mosquitoes breeding in places like toilet cistern, toilet bowl etc when I am away over the summer. I do not wish to cause a problem for neighbors or come back to a plague on my return. My thanks in advance.

Leave some bleach in the loo - but if the windows are closed anyway the little beasties can't get in. They won't breed in the pool if the pump comes on a couple of times a day. I presume you'll have a pool person to come and make sure it's topped up and chlorinated. The main places they breed are in standing water - so don't leave anything that can gather rain water - like buckets, pots etc. I doubt it will be a problem, but sadly we all get a number of mozzies during the summer. Admin sorry this is a long message but I felt The Expat's should be made aware the health problems with Mosquitoes, although many may already know I am sure.

Basil: Eat some pesto, plant an herb garden, or keep potted basil plants on your porch or patio. Mosquitoes don’t enjoy the smell of basil, so hopefully they won’t intrude on your next Italian feast.

Tansy: Another plant mosquitoes don’t like is a yellow-flowered perennial called tansy. Tansy is a low-maintenance plant that you could mix into your landscape design. Unfortunately, however, some people find the smell of tansy offensive, so you might find yourself bite-free but also alone.

We travel to The Philippines often this where my wife and two son's were born, I am mosquito fodder if anyone gets a bite you can bet I am the first one to get bitten especially if I eat a banana tried many so called anti mosquitoe creams and spray and for myself none kept the blighters away my family and I now use Vicks we may smell of Vicks better than getting bitten. Our youngest son was bittten by a Mosquito and ended up in a Chinese hospital in The Philippines for 12 days when they thought he had dengue but after treatment by Chinese doctors with various Chinese herbs he recovered thank goodness.

Good grief, that's depressing! We've lived here nearly 16 years and never had more than a few itchy bites - so please - don't panic. Anything worse is extremely rare.

best thing is to turn off water and empty cisterns and toilets...no water..no mozzies!!

But the smell!

We used to leave our property empty for a long time when we had a holiday apartment. Never had mossies when we came back and never emptied toilet cisterns or anything.
Outside is the problem if you have stagnant water that collects in old pots or, in some cases, paddling pools or buckets.
Nothing inside the house at all.
Oh, and always spray the anti-cockroach stuff around before you go especially near vents and under doors.
Plus leave wardrobe doors and bedroom doors open to avoid mould.

put some bleach down plug holes and loo, it won't smell then, make sure you clean the loo before turning off water

Have put cling film over both toilets this time as the u bend water evaporates then is open to sewer and smells, will let you know on my return.
