From this week, prescriptions can be obtained from any Pharmacy across the country and are no longer just limited to the region in which the patient lives.
This system had already gone live in the Madrid region, but now includes the 16 other regions.
Doctors anywhere in the country will be able access a patient’s medical history, meaning national travel no longer means being ‘cut off’ in terms of healthcare.
Already, the new-style red SIP cards allow for treatment anywhere in the country, though it’s not compulsory to replace your existing SIP cards until they expire, become lost or damaged.
Each patient registered on the national system, and who is in possession of a SIP card, will be assigned a code that appears on their records which links up to regional computer networks, which are now centralised.
