Hi...Surely if it has a three month expiry date then its your padron...your local town hall will renew it for you.

No, at one stage they introduced a 3 month limit on NIE as well. This was to try and make people clarify their resident status and either get a residency card or a non-residency card which makes the NIE certificate superfluous.

However, it wasn't advertised very well and not many people knew about it. They then cancelled the 3 month limit but those unlucky enough to fall into the short time when there was a limit have to renew their certificate (not the number which is valid for life).

And, yes, you have to have an appointment to renew it and there aren't any appointments available for Brits at the moment. Maybe try another garage?

Having the three month expiry on my NIE wasn't a problem when I bought a car.

If the date is on the bottom of the cert then fold it over so it is not visible and make a copy

As Marcliff says try another garage . . .your NIE number is yours forever and as I understand it the certificate issued under the short lived "dated period" is still valid as the date requirement was withdrawn.
Most people I know who have one still use it and when they have bought say, a car, the Dealer just covers over the date when taking their copy. . . .

My husband had to renew his certificate when buying a car last year. You don’t get a new number, but Trafico need to have proof of your current address by virtue of an updated certificate. We got ours in Elche, I don’t think we had an appointment ,it’s a take a number system,(check that) but get there early as there are always a lot of people.

But the NIE certificate doesn't have your address on it, and if you were issued one before they had the moment of madness with the 3 month expiry thing then you could happily use one that was 10 years old.

A recent Padron, or if like me you aren't on the Padron because you aren't resident, then a copy of your house deeds or rental agreement can be used as proof of address.
Actually for me, because I already owned a car in Spain when I bought my new(er) one, my current vehicle documents were sufficient because I was already in the Trafico system.

Pete.
