My Dad did this for years and was extremely surprised when I told him he was not allowed to do so and there was no provision in the law to allow a uk resident to drive a foreign vehicle in the uk.
Similarly, you read of people who have bought Spanish registered cars in the uk and driven them back to Spain. Unless you had the car transported to the ferry terminal/Chunnel I don’t know how this could be done legally unless you employed the services of a non-uk resident to do that element of the drive.
It’s a pain in the arse to be honest but it is what it is. I think it might be correct that the authorities (police included) themselves may not be entirely sure of the laws around this but a bigger concern to me would be whether your insurance would be valid when you’re breaking the law by driving in that country.
