Go through Moneysavingexpert, they will give you discounts to a few Excess insurance companies. We have used Questor and Carhire Excess for about £35 per year. We then use to use DoyouSpain for car hire but be careful which companies you use. Some such as Dickmanns have really bad reviews. We always used Firefly and could get a hire car for as little as €6 for a fortnight. They accept your own car hire excess insurance and have newish cars, we've had one with just 60km on the clock. Centauro also have a good reputation although I've never used them.

I now have my own little runabout because I spend all winter here and it's not worth the hassle of hiring a car.

We have our own insurance and use goldcar and they don’t give us any hassle over it, we did get charged for some damage that we had not noticed but our insurance sorted it quickly but it has made very weary and I always get them to check the car when it’s handed back

TOP TIP: If you use Quidco or Topcashback you get 32.5% cashback on Insurance4CarHire policies, which brings your £42 premium down to under £30.
If anyone wishes to go via that route, and are not Quidco/Topcashback members, let me know as they also do refer a friend bonus. On Quidco both referrer and new member get £10 each !! That would make your policy even cheaper !!

DO NOT USE CENTAURO €300 FOR A SCRATCH ON WHEEL THAT WE DIDNT DO. we’ve used Centauro for many years and numerous times every year. Whereas they normally check over the car inside and out with a light, today he was literally covering every inch of the car more thorough than ever before. He has said we scratched the alloy which we know we hadn’t (only used it from the airport and back!!) and it was that minor we didn’t notice it when we picked it up and looked over it. Anyway they’ve deducted €300. When I’ve queried the policy as the scratch is smaller than the circle they document scratches on I’ve been told this doesn’t relate to wheels or windows but they haven’t told me what their policy is with regard to these. I will never use them again and have cancelled all future bookings. Please be warned. Customer loyalty means nothing!!!

Just be sure to have a look at the reviews for both 'Do you Spain CAR HIRE' and 'Goldcar' before you sign on the dotted line. ;)

Does anybody know what documents the excess need if you do have a bump. And if you do what do you have to do in Spain?

Happened to me with Centauro, they took the money from credit card deposit,
Insurance4carhire needed the invoice for the amount that Centauro had charged and any pics that you have taken, paid out within 1 week.
