They've all started it. Bankia, despite being pensioners and having 8 times more than they stipulate being paid in each month, have several Direct Debits, use the bank card on more than the number of times they say and having far more in the account than necessary they have now started charging 6 euro a month for account maintenance.
First time in the 12 years we've been with them.

Can't go to a different bank at the moment to open another account nor go to Bankia to close the one I have at the moment.
They are all getting their pound of flesh and have changed their T&Cs as they see fit.

5 euro's a month? That's a 'bargain'. I am with La caixa who will now charge 20e per month maintenance from April. I have tried to close my account but i need the branch to be open in order to do so. I have asked if the payment will be stopped seeing as i can't go to a branch that isn't open, and so far, no response. How predictable. 20 euros a month to move digits around on a computer screen. It's effectively the same as negative interest rates only under a different name. Banks, the biggest bunch of greedy self serving highway men there is.

I am with Bankia and too have my pension paid in direct. All I had to do to keep zero charges was sign up for a credit card (free) and use it twice per month minimum, the card account is then paid back automatically on the 1st of the month directly from your current account.

A topic covered many times before especially reference to Sabadell. All I will say is that there are fee free accounts out there, yes you have to jump through some simple hoops. One of them being paying in a minimum monthly amount. BUT, all u have to realise is that once in every 6 months, if u have to much in that account unused, just send it back! Use transferwise, just a couple a quid to send it back. All depends on how really bothered you are about all those charges u encounter from your account. Good luck

I have an Expansion Account with Sabadell, my husband's pension goes into it and has always been free of charges until now...15 euros. I also have an account with Bankia which my pension goes into plus a mortgage with them and buildings insurance, but still get hefty charges and been told by the manager a few weeks ago that the only way to be free of charges is to take an insurance policy out with them!!! So, it isn't enough to have a mortgage and buildings insurance to qualify for free banking. I think all of the banks will be changing their free banking policy now.
