Could anyone explain to me in simple terms what a “No Deal Brexit “ will mean to us residents in Spain.
Is it bad news???

The EU and UK are still struggling to agree on a number of topics, but fishing and business competition rules remain the biggest dividers. The UK Government has said making a deal is “still possible” despite time being in “short supply”. The European Union has long held the belief Brexit will be a bigger problem for the 66million Brits leaving the Bloc than it will be for the EU’s 450million citizens waving goodbye to the UK.

If you’re officially a ‘resident’ then there will be very little change

Far from it. Official residents will retain their rights to live, work, travel, healthcare and pensions.
Indeed, those officially resident will also retain their rights to travel in other EU countries and will retain a EHIC for use in those countries.

The only downsides may be you have to pay customs duty on items imported from the UK and you may have to update your padron every 2 years instead of 5. Plus, if you move back to UK and sell your Spanish property, you may not be allowed the CGT exemption of transferring the profit to a new property.

Did you not get the letter from the British Embassy in Madrid?

I got one and so did my wife. Dated Nov 2020

It starts off with your rights are protected to continue to live, work and study in Spain as a UK national broadly as you do now.

It then goes on to say you should be registered for residency, get your S1 for healthcare and get a Spanish driving licence.
Surprised you didn't get one as the press reported they sent one out to all UK citizens registered in Europe so not just Spain (*well, the one from the Embassy in Madrid will only have been to us in Spain).

Thank you. We did receive the letter but was a bit concerned as it is looking likely they will leave without a deal but obviously it will not affect us living with residencia in Spain so that is good.

I never got the letter either, so it seems the process was a bit hit or miss. Either that or Correos are sitting on it.

For me the main issue will be poor exchange rates. Everyone on here in receipt of a pension from UK will lose money. I have lost a fortune with falling interest rates as a result of Brexit in one way or another - but still prefer the Spanish Climate. Tighten the belt time again.
