I don't know whether it's my imagination or global warming, but they seem to be a year round phenomenon, harmless really and more of an irritant, nasty little so and so's but great fun to squash.

I did a Food Hygiene course in UK and was told never to squash cockroaches in case they are females carrying eggs which you will spread around on your shoes.
Use a good quality spray eg Raid, available in mosts supermarkets. It is very effective in killing a roach and will give some protection if you spray it at likely entrance points like doorsteps etc.

I read that squashing them and spreading the eggs was an urban myth, however females only need to get pregnant once.

Squashing them does not release the eggs...it’s an old wives tale.

Cockroaches use an ootheca—or hard case—to bundle their eggs. The ootheca is deposited and attached to numerous surfaces around a home. When they’re ready to hatch, they do so. In most species, the eggs are neither stored nor hatched inside the mother cockroach. In the few species that do store their eggs in the above-mentioned fashion, all of the eggs are killed when a cockroach is squashed. Thus, you never have to worry about spreading eggs or worsening a problem when you squash cockroaches.

Yes infestations are quite commonplace, they need eradicating but are very good at hiding the buggers.
