Has anyone looked into the practicality of buying a car for use in England.

Car hire prices have shot up in uk and it may be a better alternative to buy a car for use when over there.

Apart from insurance and MOT are there any other issues I need to Consider?

Road tax, maintenance, storage, security, depreciation. If you are planning on going anywhere in London be careful of the ULEZ (ultra low emission zone) rules....some cars won't be allowed in.

You will find it hard to insure a car in UK if you are a resident in Spain also most insurance companies will not accept a Spanish driving licence

I've had cars in both countries for a lot of years with an EU licence (Spanish). I switch insurer most years and have never encountered a problem. I always declare it as such on whichever price comparison site I use and it always accepts it.

If resident in U.K., you can buy a U.K. car and leave it in Spain for a year as long as it’s road legal, insured, taxed, mot’d etc. So, if resident in Spain, you must be able to drive to U.K. and use a car there, so, why not do that. Spanish car in the U.K., bring it back once a year for its itv. Would that work?

I imagine it would be a bit of a faff bringing the Spanish car back to Spain for the ITV, not to mention the insurance while in the UK. Also the steering wheel would probably be on the wrong side.

Buying a cheap UK car would make sense if you have a UK address to register it under. Insurance is doable but you may pay a little more with a Spanish residency & licence..... Maybe a car share with a friend in the UK?
