why are my sent private messages still in the out box

They stay there until the person you sent it to opens them.

There are a number of reasons why that are still in your outbox,normally because there is an issue with the system or if an attachment is included it maybe too large. Not sure what email provider Marcliff is using but an email does not normally have to be read before it leaves your outbox.

OP sent a PM not an email.
Marcliff is correct. There's only one reason it's sitting there, it's because the person hasn't read it.

The pm does not have to be read by the recipitant to be removed from the outbox it just needs to be clicked on then can be deleted without reading

The question was why are PMs still in the outbox.
Not email but the site PM service.
It wasn't about deleting them, it was why they were still in the outbox and they stay there until the person it is meant for reads it.

Of course they can be deleted but that wasn't the question.
