You can go into your local pharmacy anytime and ask for your blood pressure to be taken. There’s no charge and it’s all very efficient. We have a monitor but when the GP takes it, it’s always less than ours.

Probably because the GP and pharmacy machines are calibrated on a regular basis whereas it is very rare for home ones to be done. I have 3 such machines and they all seem to give different numbers each time. One, which I sort of trusted, showed my BP was regularly getting to 140/90. The GP told me, at my age, I should aim to keep it below 135/85. She took mine and it was 128/73 and not 140/90. The pharmacy machine showed the same lower level.

On the other hand, my wife has "white coat syndrome" which is recognised problem. Seeing a doctor or nurse and up it goes. Doing it at the pharmacy and there is no problem.

Home ones are good for an indication but you should really have it checked professionally.

Thanks everybody fro the messages, the mothering law had a funny turn last night and sweated a lot. She is nearly 90 so she monitors her blood pressure regular, for 89 this is the only health problem she has got. She is very independent and she told us she had packed the monitor when we set off in the car. Did not know the pharmacy would do if so we will take the option, our son flies out in 10 day so he will bring hers. Once again thank you for all the replies , it’s nice that we have this forum to ask for advice.

Just to chip in with my 2 pence worth. When getting your blood pressure checked, make sure it is taken properly. There are several things which can affect the reading, and therefore the accuracy of the test. Such things as sitting down and relaxing for 10-15 minutes before the test, or having the test taken over clothing as opposed to not, or if you have had a coffee that day etc. It is also best to take a test every day for several days to work out the average. All common sense to anyone, but you'd be surprised how many health "professionals" skip on these essentials. I know the pharmacy tests that i have seen are taken when you're standing up. A big no no. And usually you get out of a car, march into the pharmacy, and get it taken there and then. And for those who have high blood pressure, i have found that eating a fresh mixed and colourful salad each day with a avocado in it can bring it down significantly (from personal experience).
