passport in car

I was told by a friend that you need among other things to carry your passport or a copy of it in your car is this correct i was not aware of this

mondo is correct but they do accept the small one as long as it has been stamped.

You should carry ID at all times.
Get your passport photocopied, take it to town hall who will stamp it, then have it reduced & laminated.
But when I was stopped by the police, they said that Spanish driving licence was sufficient as it had your NIE on it.

thanks for the replies i always carry my a copy of my padron which has my nie number on it but will get a decent copy of my passport now.
