I always go Calais,Rouen, Le Mans, Bordeaux, Dax, Somport Tunnel, Jaca, Zaragoza, Teruel, Valencia . Lovely views through the Pyrenees.
Can I ask kazzyb for details of hotel in Zaragoza

The route I have chosen this year is Portsmouth - Caen overnight, Rennes, Nantes, Niort, Bordeaux, Dax, Oloron Sainte Marie, Jaca. Overnight at Hotel Oreol, used it several times, good 4* with secure parking. Day 2
Jaca, Huesca, Zaragoza, Valencia, La Font de La Figuera, Alicante, Quesada. I drive this solo and with only 3 lots of toll booths in France at a total cost under 30 €. The drive through the mountains is beautiful and the roads are great.

We go from Portsmouth to Santander with Brittany Ferries. There is 24 hours on the boat and then from Santander to Torrevieja is about 10 hours drive (without stops).
Although initially it looks the expensive when you've added on the cost of petrol, tolls, overnight stops, meals en route etc. The ferry route via Santander or Bilboa is reasonable value, especially if you fork out for their regular traveller scheme.
We've done the travel via the tunnel and it is a helluva drive usually requiring two overnight stops as we have a three and a half hour through England before we reach the channel.

We use the same route as kazzyb - can't remember what total tolls were, but not as much as €100? We find cheap, dog friendly hotels using Booking.com, usually no more than €50 each one. If you have time and want a real treat, we stopped at La Pertuzerie in Saint Savinien last week, absolutely delightful and €60 including our breakfasts, about a 7.5 hour drive from Calais

Why dont you use F1, about 25 euro for 2 and 3 or 4 for breakfast. Mike

Do it without toll roads. Will take you about 2 hours longer but you see a bit more and the drive through the Pyrenees is awsome. Its surprising how on the French side everything looks a little shabby and then when you come through the tunnel to the spanish side the roads are better and everything looks more well kept. This is going through the canfranc tunnel which drops you in above Zaragoza and is totally toll free on the spanish side and about €3 on a small bit of toll road around Bordeaux (nice place to stop off enroute)
The money you save on tolls easily covers your food and hotel for the night.
Just put in toll free on sat nav or Google Maps . It takes you Calais , Rouen etc going towards Lemans and bordeaux

It depends what you want to do.
If you are at work and live nearish Dover/Eurotunnel and want to drive and take less holiday. Finish work take the evening Eurotunnel drive to Chartres by midnight/one am(prebook hotel). Leave at 0700 and by midnight you should be down here around 1000 miles two drivers and only lose a days travelling and one back home.

Avoid Zarragoza by turning off at Mallen about 25 km south of Tudela on A68 and travel across country on straight fast roads exiting at Carinena 20 mins south of Zarragoza. 2 nice hotels in Carinena at 40 euros, 1 takes pets. Also nice wine town to take a stroll and fill up at reasonable price.
