I pay £37 per year (€43) for the insurance, so to get €2.85 a day up to €280, I'd have to stick €217 of fuel in the car!!!

I could drive back to the UK and back!!!!

I may be mistaken but I'm sure you must be talking about excess for car hire insurance. That's not actual insurance for the car but insurance to cover the excess if you have an accident or damage to the car.
I wouldn't use that instead of full insurance which all decent hire companies should include anyway.Although I always buy the annual excess cover.

Yes...I'm talking about excess insurance.

My mistake...I thought the poster was talking about the CDW insurance offered at the rental car companies!

Hi everyone I did the same thing about 18 months ago I always use doyouspain.com I always use to book my flights then book car hire straight away and think that's everything don for my visit to Spain but not sure why I just put my details in and the cost had dropped drastically so now I keep going onto the site and check cost so I rebook a car then cancell the other one I have just returned from Spain was there for 3 weeks and paid €1.25
Does anyone know what is going on when you book your car hire online and it gives you the option of taking out excess insurance at a reduced rate if you tick to say you don't want to take up that option it says you may have to take out the car hire insurance when you collect your car which works out a more than 3 times more is this scaremongering or can the car hire make you take out the insurance

The one time that I pre-paid for the insurance, they put the fear of God into me at the hire desk. They told me that the insurance (through Do You Spain) wasn't valid and actually dialled the number for me to cancel it, which I did. Not worth the stress.

We booked Dickmans through Do you Spain. They took £912.00 on our credit card as a deposit because we took out our own insurance. We returned the car in perfect condition in January and are still fighting to get our deposit retuned. Our credit card company are dealing with it but it is a nightmare. So far Do you Spain have not managed to get it refunded. I would not recommend Dickmans to anyone unless you take their insurance they are terrible and their attitude when you collect is atrocious !!! However we have used Do you Spain for Firefly and they are great even if you take your own insurance. So it does depend on the car hire company.

Fully agree with the Firefly comment above.

Never been a problem!

When you say 'your own insurance'do you mean excess hire car insurance as I didn't think there was any other as hire cars must have their own car insurance. Anyway the excess companies say there is no need to tell the hire companies that you have excess insurance. The extra top up insurance that hire companies offer for tyres, glass, undercarriage, etc is only voluntary and the annual excess insurance covers that. A decent hire car company would charge a decent price for a fully comprehensively insured car.

Agree Fuzzygirl. I now only book with Firefly though DYS. I have heard so many horror stories about the other hire companies that I just de-select all and just tick Firefly. Bizarrely it is much cheaper than booking with Firefly direct.

We have our own excess insurance and when they ask at the desk if we want the additional insurance I say no we have our own and they accept that without asking to see it (although I do take a copy in case they do). They usually block €1000 on the credit card but that is lifted when you return the car. They have never taken anything apart from the agreed charges.
