Bringing 2 dogs to Spain

Hi

I feel sure this must have been asked before, but can't seem to find anything. We would like to bring our 2 dogs out to Spain preferably this September for approximately 2 months and wonder what is the best way to do it? We have tried Brittany Ferries but there doesn't seem to be any sailings with pet friendly cabins left. We have a Yorkie and a Spaniel, both small females.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Georgia,

We travel across regularly, and the answer is subject to where you are coming from, and how well your dogs travel. We have two small dogs, and two cats. Incidentally, we booked only last week for next year, and were able to get pet friendly cabins both ways for next year, on the Portsmouth to Bilbao route. There are very few of these, and you really do need to book early to get one.
The route we have booked, is normally a full 24 hours, and then it is a nine hour drive from there to Quesada.
Another option is the fast cat from Portsmouth, which takes about 2 1/2 hours, but you have a 16 hour drive to Quesada. Obviously there is always the tunnel but you have 21 hours to drive. Or there is Plymouth to Roscoffe, which is 6 hours, but the dogs have to stay in the car, and again a 16 hour drive to Quesada. There are plenty of budget hotels that readily accept dogs, on all of the above routes, so first decide which crossing you prefer, then we can advise you from there on your options.
It really is quite straightforward, and we have never had any issues to date. As with everything, plan well in advance, and there are more options open to you. Fortunately, you have chosen a quieter period for the crossings which will make the hotels and roads that bit quieter, John

I bring 2 very large dogs out every summer. I drive it in one go channel tunnel through France and Spain. 28hrs from NW England to Villamartin. Regular stops 3 hrs for us and the dogs. Share driving with the wife and drive through the night. The longer ferries are not an option for us. Cost too much take too long and we are separated from our dogs.
Yep it is tough, but we just want to get there. So we don't mess around, toll roads all the way. Roads are dead and you can really put your foot down

Thanks to you both for your replies.

We can get a pet friendly cabin to Le Havre, but still a long drive from there. Hard for me to book far ahead at present due to my elderly mum's nursing home closure, moved to another one, and problems re the finance....well it's very expensive and she's been bled dry....But do hope to get to Spain with the girls sometime in the foreseeable future instead of just going for short trips ourselves and leaving them with minders.

You could also fly with Vueling. Since they are small dogs you bring them in the cabin with you.

I think you will find no pets from the UK or Ireland with Fueling.
Shame!!

You can take small dogs with Vueling just as long as they are in a pet carrier. We saw 2 people travelling with small dogs on our last flight out to Spain.

Hi

That's interesting, will look into it. Problem may be that the 2 year old spaniel, Georgie, is epileptic and now on medication, but this seems to control it. Anyway, we can ask her vet and I'll check prices. Also many thanks for the suggestion made by Liz & Gordon, have sent an enquiry to the firm mentioned.

According to website. No.
Each passenger can travel with one pet and only 2 pets are allowed per flight.
This service is only available for flights operated by Vueling and Iberia.
You must carry your pet's immunisation record and, in the case of international flights, its passport (ask your vet about how to get one).
You can carry food for your pet inside your hand luggage.
You must not take your pet out of the pet carrier until you have disembarked.
Important: This service is not available for flights to/from the United Kingdom or Ireland.

Ah ok Polop, I stand corrected. I didnt read the whole article. Just saw 2 people with dogs in the Vueling queue at the airport when we checked in. They must have been on a different flight.

Sorry Georgia for misleading you
