There are a couple of sites that do it for you but they charge for the privilege. Spaincarcheck.com charges around 20 euro and stop24.es but a bit more expensive.
There's also carfax.eu but you need the VIN for that, not the registration.
The official dgt.es site has a way of checking and you need to choose "informe del vehiculo" under Tramites y multas but you need a digital certificate (signing up previously) to access the reports.
Perhaps a gestoria would be able to do it at a similar price and you'd have the comfort of knowing your payment is safe.

Thanks Marcliff not as easy as I thought, seems the whole process of buying a 2nd hand car is a bit of a nightmare. Can't seem to get my head round the transfer of names and costs involved either. Is there a local gestoria in Quesada who could advise? I'm in uk at the moment but will arrive next week and would like to be able to steam ahead if the car I'm viewing is suitable.

I used spaincarcheck.com to check out both the car I had and the new one I was buying... you need to do this. A local dealer on the Lemon Tree Road managed to sell me a car with an embargo on it. I only found out what he had done (illegally) when I came to trade in the car 2 years later. The car check site was easy to use and for about 23 euros (a little more than basic price) I had the email report in a matter of minutes in English.

Also go and see Mar at Sol.4 (next to 'Let's Eat in Benimar just up from Studz) .. extremely helpful, will tell you what she needs and will do it all for you, speak English. (She is a very useful person to know and her office handle everything you could need to do here in Spain).

Hi, I used a site called Carfax. It gave me a full report for €10.00 John.
