You can find LHD cars in the UK from specialist dealers on the Autotrader and Ebay websites. Some are even Spanish registered.

Depending on the time you plan to spend in Spain, I would look at the difference of owning a car in Spain (write off, insurance, parking at airport, tax) and renting one.
If you book your rental car in advance and take a separate car hire excess insurance (like icarhireinsurance.com) instead of buying the insurance with the rental company, you can rent many times before it becomes cheaper to own a car in Spain.

Thanks, JoB but we do plan to come for about 6 months in total in the year. Probably about 2 months each time. I have roughly calculated and the money spent on car hire would be a great big chunk towards a car.

Bringing UK car to Spain

Hello everybody

I have read he posts on here relative to this subject but if possible could someone give me some further advice and if I do mdecide to bring the car, recommend a person/company to handle the transfer. Basically I have the opportunity of aquiring a Renault Clio in the Uk with very little mileage and am considering bringing the vehicle to Spain. The car is 14 yrs old but is immaculate and should last for another few years. Clearly I looking as to whether this is financially viable and whether restrictions within Spain would price this car as to expensive. Will I have had to own the car for a set period before I can import it?what roughly is the import tax?, Is there anyway around avoiding this payment?, how much would it cost to transfer the car to Spanish registration?I know about the headlights issue and I would get them replaced before I bring the car over. Will Spanish insurance companies insure a UK car ?, or will it have to remain as UK insurance until the transfer. I know there are a lot of questions, the car is good value in the UK but if it is to cost thousands to import it to Spain then its not cost effective. I really do appreciate your help and

Quite a lot of questions there!
I’d suggest you contact Graham Shelton at:
http://spanish-number-plates.com

The only way I know to avoid some of the import costs is if you are becomi g a resident and you import the vehicle as a personal possession. I think in this case you have to have owned it for 6 months and you have to do the re-registration within about a month of first going on the Padron. Graham will give you the details if it’s relevant to you.
You should also consider these two points:
1] rear fog lights may also need to be modified
2) UK insurance won’t normally cover you for more than 28 days when abroad, and not at all if you become resident in Spain.

Bottom line is that you’ll probably spend €750 - €1000 sorting out your car and when you’ve done it will probably be worth about the same amount if you try to sell it.
Driving a RHD car in Spain isn’t ideal for a variety of reasons, but you’ll need to decide if it’s worth the time, money and hassle to save buying at Spanish prices.

Pete.
