Hi All

I am getting really fed up with high car hire prices and looking to bring our 2nd car to Spain and leave it out there at our villa in Quesada

Been read a lot of stuff here and elsewhere and keep see vague mentions about a time limit for the vehicle to be in Spain

So can anyone enlighten me?

Any "bear traps" in terms of MOT/ITV testing, road fund licenses and insurance?
Anyone care to recommend any English speaking road side assistance as my Spanish would not be up to it if there was a problem

Know I am asking a lot but TIA

Geoff

You can only have a U.K. reg car in Spain legally for 6 months with up to date mot insurance etc ,
if your going to be putting it on Spanish plates it will need headlights changed ( left hand drive ) the total cost will depend on the age of car ,engine size etc ,you will need to get a proper quote

You don't say if you intend to get it converted and re registered in Spain . . .if you are leaving it here then you should as it will simplify your life considerably.
if unconverted and on uk plates you would have to take it back to uk annually to get it mot'd as its not going to pass an itv in Spain.
If converted, you can easily get Spanish insurance which will (mostly) include breakdown cover.
The 90 day / 132 day time limit is mostly down to the person for residency not the vehicle itself, if legal, but can be used by the authorities as evidence if you fall foul of it.

Another smaller issue and If not a problem it’s inconvenient are tolls and car park ticket machines. You have to get out of the car with it being RHD

Yes I believe 6 months minimum.
You MUST have mot, tax, and insurance if you keep it as a uk car.
People do keep their cars here longer on a uk plate. It’s the norm.
If you don’t have the above they will tow it away there and then no questions
They have an APP that logs straight on to DVLC tells them if you are covered
Trust me. They did it to me.
€250 fine and no car. Tow truck came, took it away. Had to get taxi back home.

Not too many pros.
Lots of cons.
Overtaking large vehicles can be particularly dangerous in a rhd.

I’d consider selling your car and buying LHD car in Spain. As has been pointed out this is the safest option (eg overtaking) second- hand here is more expensive but if you look around and are patient I belive €7 - 8000 would buy something pretty decent.Depends what you want it for - a run-about would be a lot cheaper. RHD car would be difficult to sell on in Spain if you ever want to upgrade your car in the future.

Why not try and buy a LHD car in the UK and bring it over to Spain.
