Thank you Busters Mum. That does clarify things for me regarding trafico as my NIE certificate also has no expiry date yet was rejected by trafico. Tried to make an appointment at the Police office in Torrevieja but they would not do it by telephone and referred me to their website. The website
was 'down'when I tried ! Eventually it was up and running and managed to find the appointments page. The next available slot was at the end of July!!!!!!!!!!!
As we are non residents we will not be here then and won't return until October. Yes it is crazy - as all it really needs is a simple update. Grrrrrr!

Try for an appointment in Elche. I was able to get an appointment there much sooner than either Torry or Orihuela. Marcliff had given you a very comprehensive reply I would Just add take passport photos with you otherwise that will be another hurdle to clear. Fortunately there was a photo booth outside the police station. Parking was a struggle too no car park, have to find street parking.

Thanks to all for your replies. I have managed an appointment in Orihuela in two weeks time. Thank you Sylwina for the advice re passport photographs. I would not have thought of that and just have taken my passport.

Interesting topic. As a non resident my bank renews our certificates every 2 years and charges us around 70-75 euros for the privilege. They also need to see our passports which is a bit inconvenience if we are not there. On one occassion they warned us they were about to freeze our account if we had not gone into the bank.
Is there a more convenient/cheaper way of renewing the non res certificate ourselves.
Thanks

As a non resident I had the old hand written version NIE document, which was about 15 years old and not acceptable to Traffico in Alicante for a purchased car registration.
I managed to renew my NIE (same number) in the U.K. at the Spanish Consulate in London , my new format NIE document took about 3 weeks to arrive by email, it cost £8.50 or thereabouts. The process at the Consulate was a bit chaotic but I managed to complete the required paperwork as they have an English version template to copy. You need 2 photo copies of your passport and original NIE when making the application at the Consulate . I understand this process is also used for new applications for NIE documents at Spanish Consulates.

Hi there, we are in a similar position regarding a car purchased in Spain.
We are not resident, with a property in Quesada that we have had since 1990.
The NIE we have was issued in 1992 and we need the updated card version for the car purchase.
It is quite a hassle trying to organise getting a new one in Spain while being in the UK, so I am considering going to the Consulate in London in person.
The issue I have is that I will be going there on behalf of my father (in whose name the NIE is registered on the original document) will this be a problem?
Also, I only have an electronic scan of the NIE, the original paper one is currently in Spain.
So, please could anyone let me know if I am able to go to the London Consulate on behalf of my father and can I use the digital copy on my phone/tablet or will I have to produce the paper original?
Many thanks.
