We have been told that the Spanish authorities won’t accept a Jersey driving licence when applying for a Spanish driving licence. Does anyone have advice\experience on how we can get around this?

Unfortunately driving licences issued in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not recognised in Spain as they are not EU licences.
The DGT has a large list of non EEA countries from which driving licences can be exchanged but Jersey is not on that list.

I do know someone who had an Isle of Man DL and was not allowed to change it for a Spanish one and had to take a Spanish driving test to obtain one.
Advice given by some is to contact your consulate or embassy in Spain but Jersey, I assume, comes under the UK consulate so maybe contact them to see if the only way is to take a Spanish driving test (you can take the theoretical part in English but have to enrol at a driving school to do so).

Also try contacting Matt at one way services (up from Goyos in Quesada) as he may have come across this situation before.

As an aside, the Jersey government website states that you should carry an International Driving Permit along with your Jersey licence to drive in certain countries in Europe but doesn't list which ones.

May not work, I believe if you exchange a non EU licence for a UK one then the resultant UK licence itself is not exchangeable elsewhere unless that country itself has an exchange agreement with the original issuer - in which case of course you would be taking advantage of that in the first place.

Not that it helps you but apparently, and similarly to UK, a Spanish licence is exchangeable for a Jersey one - so much for reciprocation then!

Residents of Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man
Any residents from Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man will be able to exchange their licence if it was issued on or after 1 April 1991. Unlike residents of Northern Ireland, however, you’ll have to pay the standard exchange fee. You will also have to provide a medical report (D4) filled in by a doctor.
