Buying a new car...

Just looking for an up-to-date definitive answer on this one...

When purchasing a new car in Spain...

a) what documentation is required?
b) do you need to be on the padron, or be resident?
c) might there be an issue with having to change driving licences if you buy as a non-resident, as mentioned in the article below?

http://cervantesalarcon.com/en/2017/11/ ... situation/

Thanks!

We’ve just moved here two months ago. We bought a new car and all we needed was NIE, driving liscence, think we needed a utility bill with our Spanish address on it. That was it.

The information in this article is as clear as mud. IMO it seems to be designed to frighten non residents into using that particular company's services. Generally speaking I think to buy a car new or secondhand you need a current address and nie, padron is not necessary (since you should only be on the pardon if you are resident.

From my experience: I have bought a secondhand car privately. This had to be registered with trafico in Alicante, who wanted to know just about everything about me, my seed, breed and generation, not just my nie but have an original current nie certificate, passport, house deeds etc.I was one of the unlucky people who got their nie when the system was in flux and they were experimenting with giving 3/month nie certificates and because I wanted to buy a car (as trafico are pedantic on this) I ended up having to get my nie reissued (/at a cost) and will probs have to go through that again in the future. But can definitely say you DON'T need padron.

But I didn't deal with trafico personally, got a local gestor to do all the stuff for me, which really really is worth the money...

You’re right Shiva, we did need the deeds to the house. They copied them and and gave us back the original.

The town hall will normally issue a Padron specifically for car purchase that plùs our NIE was enough to purchase a brand new car

We didn’t have our padron when we bought the new car from Kia dealership in torrevieja. But as I said they copied our title deeds. Think they accept as much documentation that u have.

We bought our car in February this year, 2nd hand from a dealer. Just needed NIE and passport. Nothing else.

a. You need NIE, passport and proof of address. Some ask for deeds, some just a utility bill and others don't bother.
b. Some dealers still ask for padron but proof of address is enough. If you live in Quesada then Rojales town hall will issue you a padron which does make it a bit easier. You do not need to be resident.
c. No, you don't change your license if you are non-resident (would be a bit silly as you drive in UK). That only applies to residents in Spain in some circumstances.

You can be a non resident and be on the Padron. The numbers on the Padron determine the amount of funding to the local council.
We needed the Padron to buy our car from an official dealership.
