You can pay in several ways but not at a post office.
You can pay online at the DGT website:
Paying online
(Remember to use a comma for separating the euro from the cent, eg 100,00 for a hundred euro).
You can pay at trafico, nearest is Elche.
Probably the easiest way is to pay at a Caixa bank which accepts cash.

I think we had to pay the most arrogant and rude Guardamar Civil on the spot. Unpleasant experience.

They seem to be stepping up on speeding, both in France & Spain. I got done last Autumn, on leaving Madrid. I was not aware of it, as I was doing the same speed as everybody else in heavy traffic (caught on camera). They sent the documentation to my home address in the UK, as I am not a resident over here. Luckily, I have my daughter check my mail back home, and she scanned it, and sent it to my email address. I was then able to pay the 50e fine rather than the 100e fine for prompt payment.

It has become almost impossible to drive from Spain to the UK and back, without getting a ticket for something.

I do not think that you should have done that. Did he make out the ticket and did you get a receipt ?
I know it can be difficult if you do not speak the language.

Then you must not have been a resident, only non residents have to pay on the spot .

If you´re going back for 8-10 weeks, you need a car and hiring one in peak season for that length of time is prohibitive.
Plus the fact, a plane isn´t that good for sightseeing.
