We had our medicals last week and I spent days trying to book online appointments at Tráfico Elche. I have since been told by others that the next available dates for both Elche and Alicante are in June which would mean the medical certificate would have expired. (They are valid for 3 months).
On Monday I booked two appointments at Cartagena for 14 March. You need to select which Tráfico office you would like to attend and then complete an online form for each appointment with personal details plus your UK license number. It will then allow you to select available times and dates appointment dates.
Good luck

You will need the official application form which is here:
Application form

Your passport and a copy
Residencia
Padron (in date in last 3 months)
Driving Licence and counterpart
A recent photograph (if you go to the opticians by the Repsol garage in town they will do the correct size and type).
Take two photos to be on the safe side.
The payment which was €26 last year but may have changed.
NIE certificate which is not really necessary if you have residency but best to take it.
The medical which, hopefully, will still be in date when you get your appointment.

Take copies of everything.
When you go to trafico, they will issue a form stating you have applied to change your licence and they will give you your licence back
Once they have checked with DVLA UK that you have a valid licence, they will call you to make another appointment. At that appointment they will take your UK licence from you and issue you with a temporary paper one which is only valid in Spain.
A week or so later you will receive the new Spanish licence in the post.

Best of luck.

What a nightmare that all sounds. Yesterday a lovely Spanish lady Uma Sanchez picked us up and took us to Rojales for our medical and tests. She filled out all the paperwork and today is taking it all to traffico. All we do now is wait for licences to arrive in post. It cost €220 for me and my husband which may sound a lother but you can't put a price on doing it stress free. Herb wrb site is getlegalinspain.com

Yes Carol you are right a complete pain, and I would do it the same way as you, a hell of a better way to avoid running about stress, and as you say expensive.

Pete.
