We are about to change our licenses to Spanish driving license so this post has been very informative however if they take your UK driving licence, can anyone tell me if we covered when returning to the UK for hols etc.

Also, we are about to insure our car here. Spanish car and we want fully comp insurance for a few drivers. Any insurance companies you can recommend please?

The paper one they issue you is only valid in Spain. However, once they've taken your old licence away, it should take less than 2 weeks for the new one to arrive in the post.
If you're talking about the new Spanish one they issue then it is valid in any EU country and lots more besides.

Several insurance companies around that have been recommended. like Linea Directa, Mapfre, Liberty Seguros etc.
It's the car that's insured in Spain, not the driver so it will cover you for any driver. The owner has to provide a letter giving permission for another person to drive the car.

Had a quote for 149e for this process to be problem free...is this a pre brexit ripoff?
