Depends on whether you've come here to live or just brought it over to use on visits.

In the first case strictly speaking you have one month to transfer onto Spanish plates, in the latter you can keep a car here for 6 months in any 12 after which you must register it or remove it.

There are a number of companies who will do the job of registering for you, but at a price.
Depending on what car it is and notwithstanding the sometimes shockingly high cost of replacing headlights and any doing other minor jobs which may be required to get it through an ITV (fog light for instance), reckon on upwards of €1000.

As an aside, if you've moved here to live then and the car is on UK insurance then unless you've made a special arrangement with them it's almost certain that your cover is now null and void !

If you are a Spanish legal resident then you are not allowed to drive a UK reg car

Leigh from Spanish Number Plates. They organise everything for you and look after you every step of the way. With regards to headlights my car was a Ford Fiesta and the lights were made for a left or right hand drive so were switched over rather than new lights. It’s quite unusual not to replace lights but you may be lucky with your existing car and that is a big saving.

Morning all ;-),

Regarding car head lights, a lot of modern Renault (including Dacia) and Citroen car headlights do not need changing. In fact they don’t even need the temporary filters fitted when changing from Europe into/from UK, the reflector prisms are set so no adjustments are required.

Have a good day all :-)

If the car is reasonably new 2/3 years, the import tax (???) can be horrendously expensive, mine was €3500 plus €296 + Vat Each for the headlights. Some cars have to have Reversing lights and rear Fog lights changed to opposite wings if they haven’t got lights on both sides. I found it a very expensive process and it’s very inconvenient at the toll booths and parking barriers. If you have a tow-bar fitted in UK you must have proprietary documentation or you will have to remove it.
