Get your application in before Nov. 1st or you could be stuffed!

A poor translation from the DGT website:

https://sede-org.dgt.gob.es/sede-electr ... dex.shtml#

Should take place BREXIT , the UK will no longer belong to the European Union, so that all agreements on trade within the EU will no longer be valid for UK citizens. Among other things, this means that the permissions from the UK will only be valid for driving in Spain during the first 9 months of the BREXIT, provided they are in force.
If you want to continue driving in our country, you must make an exchange (approval), renewal or replacement of your permission by one Spanish equivalent, must deliver the original.
The DGT launches a protocol that will allows the exchange of your license UK to Spanish equivalent in the same preconditions to BREXIT without having to wait for the signing of a new agreement between countries or having to obtain a new Spanish driving license.
For this you must be
holder of a driving license in the UK,
have
habitual residence in Spain
and submit an
application before the November 1, 2019
. Thus, whatever happens on October 31, 2019, you guarantee that we address you to make the exchange of your license for a period of 9 months from the date of BREXIT.

At the time of the procedure will be withdrawn the original permit and give you a provisional permit. Within approximately a month and a half you have your final permit. You do not have to worry about going to your Chief or Office Traffic , you send it by mail to home.

I'd agree with A.N.Other that to be on the safe side any resident still using a UK licence needs to make best efforts right now to change to a Spanish Licence - there's a world of difference between not over-worrying about stuff and performing ostrich manoevres ( which I remain bemused to see many people doing in relation to potential Brexit impact on them personally... )

However my Brother-in-Law has been trying to get an appointment in Alicante for this purpose for several months, with no joy. ( It took my sister 4 months to get one! ). Have advised them their best chance is to to forget about doing it themselves and go with a gestor - would highly recommend Torrievieja Translators for the driving licence exchange. They are formally affiliated to the DGT in Elche and seem to have a better chance of getting the stuff done quickly. I used them to change mine and was impressed by their professionalism. https://torreviejatranslators.com/drivi ... exchanges/

The you are not a resident and the driving licence exchange doesn't apply - you might need to get anIDP to have alongside your UK licence, there seems to be conflicting guidance on that at the moment but if you do need to do so it's something you can get easily at the big Post Offices in the UK .

Was listening to myra from CAB spain on TRE yesterday, even she is perplexed by the new declaration by the DGT after them promising there would be a 9 month grace period, and thst given the lack of clear guidance and appointments it would be impossible for many to comply.

Again a wait and see when the goalposts will move again situation

Provided you apply to exchange your license before the end of October, you will then have 9 months in which to complete the exchange. The important thing is to apply before then.

It's all spelled out in a special protocol issued by the DGT.

That’s true but, why wait until it’s too late before exchanging a licence? Especially if the consequences of ‘no deal’ is not really understood.

And why, if UK emigrants to the EU should not drive on a UK licence, beyond six months of obtaining residency, do some people not exchange their licence?

And yet people on here, complain about immigrants in the UK, not abiding by UK law
