Hi There,
We are after selling a Spanish plated car here in Spain.
Is it the buyer, or the seller who pays for the ownership transfer & the tax? Help!!

The buyer. Saying that, most dealers will include the cost of the transfer in the purchase price although I have seen "plus transfer tax" on some adverts.

I thought that that was the case. I have just bought a second hand car & paid for the transfer. Now I have a buyer for my old car who is trying to get me to pay for the transfer on that one as well!

It doesn't matter who "finances" for the transfer, its the purchaser who parts with the money at the office. So, as a seller you can up the price to include it, or go 50-50, or say "price excludes transfer", whatever you decide. Just find out how much it will cost before hand.
Bought a Fiat convertible in December, cost 170€ to transfer, and I also bought a Jag convertible which cost 275€ to transfer. I budgeted the cost into what I was prepared to spend for the cars and paid for it myself.
Some Gestors are more expensive than others....so shop around (I saved 125€ between the two cars with just a couple of phone calls).

If I bought a Spanish car in the UK,and brought it over,what would the process be to confirm it was "road legal" would uk MOT cover me ? Also can I insure the vehicle in the UK would that suffice?.
It would be my intention to leave the car in Spain and use on our visits.

Was it still on Spanish plates or was it re-registered in UK? If Spanish plates, you can check with trafico to see if still legal. If UK plates then you would have to go through the process of re-registering to Spanish plates.
The MOT and insurance will only cover you for a short trip, not to leave the car here permanently. You will probably find the UK insurance company will only cover you for up to 3 months on basic (3rd party only) insurance.
Any vehicles remaining in Spain for more than 6 months must have Spanish insurance and a Spanish ITV plus Spanish plates.
In other words, if the car was exported to UK then you need to start from scratch. If it was just driven over for a short while you may be OK but the UK MOT and insurance will not be sufficient.

Marcliff Just at the stage of exploring options,my thinking was a Spanish car bought here UK ,that way I could have it rechecked by the garage I use regularly giving me piece of mind.

We are thinking of "nearly new" delivery mileage etc.

Is the Spanish car market similar to UK in terms of prices?

New cars in Spain are comparable to UK. Cars up to about 3 years old are also comparable in that they lose a fair amount of value in the first few years. However, anything over 3 years old will be much more expensive in Spain, especially if it is quite old. For example, a 7 or 8 year old family saloon costing about a thousand in UK would probably be more like 3 or 4 thousand here. Even 10 year old cars plus go for over 3.000 euro.
If you're going to buy at about 3 years old then the price difference is negligible (especially with the pound doing rather well at the moment).
For a "nearly new" then check out the main dealers who have many such cars in stock plus ones they have taken in part exchange. There is also Goldcar sales in Torrevieja who sell cars about 3 years old for very good and comparable prices. I know at least 4 people who have bought from them and are very happy.
As another example, 3 year old Toyota Yaris for 7.300 (£5600) and UK price is about £6,000 for similar model.

Definitely better to have a Spanish car here in Spain. A UK registered car will be illegal, no matter what you do.
If you are looking at "nearly new", then maybe you should buy from a main dealership for guarantees, and get them to deal with the transfer of ownership, and then you can accept the vehicle when your papers arrive.
If you buy a Spanish car privately in England, you need to make sure that it has a current ITV (UK's MOT won't do), receipts for proof that all car tax is paid up to date (otherwise you won't be able to transfer the car into your name here in Spain), and a copy of the previous owners Spanish residencia or British Passport (again, without this you may have a hard time transferring ownership). You will also need a contract of sale/purchase stating All the car details, and ALL the sellers and buyers details.
The car must have its TARGETA TECNICA (ITV book), and PERMISO DE CIRCULATION (log book, in the name of the seller). If it doesn't, it may be stolen. If its an honest sale but without papers, you may never be able to transfer ownership, no matter what the owner promises you.
If there is outstanding debt on the car, the Spanish bank can take the car from you when it returns to Spain. (don't know how you would check that one....If you have the slightest doubt, don't buy it!)
I may be totally off the mark with my advice (I am a musician, not a legal expert), but to safeguard yourself, do not buy anything that doesn't match at least what I have advised.
Of course, the safest thing to do is ask an English lawyer HERE IN SPAIN (by phone or email) for a list of absolute MUST-HAVES and MUST-NOT-HAVES.
If you get conned, it will be almost IMPOSSIBLE to fix thanks to Spanish bureaucracy, red tape and criminal levels of inefficiency, not to mention inbred apathy. (I should know, I had to scrap a beautiful classic car because of Spanish Bu****it! It wouldn't have happened in the UK.)
Be wise and buy safe.
