Goldcar. International driving permit?

We are flying into Alicante on Thursday and have hired a car with Goldcar. I’ve just printed off the rental agreement and it’s states that we require an international driving permit to collect the car. I know the U.K. has an agreement with the EU that means we don’t officially need one, but with Goldcar stating on the voucher we do, I’m confused. Has anyone hired with them recently and been asked to provide one?

Hi, by the rules you shouldn´t need one, but all bets are off since Brexit.
You can get one from the post office for 5.50 pounds to be sure.
UK Gov link attached.

Hi We had the same booking with Firefly, on the T&C's it does state that " International Driving Licence:
Please note that if you do not have an EU driving licence you will need to bring an international driving
licence along with your original licence to rent the car."
I did visit the PO and obtain an IDP even though the GOV.UK website says it is not required to drive in Spain with a full UK Licence.
At the desk all they wanted was my booking number, as I am a previous customer and card details, no passport, no drivers licence let alone an IDP.
But you could guarantee if I didn't have one they would have requested one.

Given the recent posts on Goldcar on this site, I'd be looking elsewhere to hire my car if you're able to cancel.

Terrible company to deal with. They'll really screw you over if they can.

Surprisingly the same happened to me in the UK. I wanted to hire a van so checked by phone first. I was asked if I had and international drivers permit because my licence is Spanish. I pointed out their terms and conditions, that if the licence was issued in the EU I didn't need one. He was going to check and ring back...guess what no telephone call.

I had the same problem with del Paso. They wanted me to take out their excess policy at an extra cost of 287 euro. I told them to keep their car. I had booked through do you Spain and they got me sorted at another hire car company. The rep said that most of the hire car companies have the requirement to have an international driving permit. My advice get one it’s only £5.50

The requirement is not from the uk or Spanish government. It is the car hire companies themselves that are asking for it. It is trier car so they can ask for whatever they want.

Hi all....

I thought Gold Car has ceased trading, indeed their main airport parking/office location at the airport area is completely empty as is their offices in Torry .
As for additional licence neither I with Aqua Car or a friend with small car hire company in Rojales (name escapes me) had to produce anything additional.
I would check prior to arrival Gold Car are still trading.

Hope all goes well for you.
