I've just seen some warning notices that have been issued for this week - regarding high winds and storms.

Some of my friends, who live around Torrevieja, have been hit badly (flooded), in previous years when one of these hit.

I have been in Spain during one - and I didn't venture out! I think that driving would have been quite difficult - and I definitely didn't want to be walking!!

Hope everything is ok out there. It seems quite unusual to get an early warning of a Gota Fria and late August is unusual too. We have been there twice during one but both times were late September /October. We have even flown home during the tail end of a Gota Fria and the flights were cancelled for a few hours and when they resumed the pilot of our plane warned of extra turbulence when we were airborne and it was really rocky, just like a roller coaster!.......... :confusion-helpsign: :scared-eek: pretty scary for a nervous flyer like me!

As Sandra says it's best not to venture out. We went to Torrevieja once , around the Carrefour area, the day after a Gota Fria and the parked cars, in one of the residential roads, had been stacked up by the force of the flood waters running in torrents down the road.

I do hope it passes without too much trouble.

Can you keep me posted. This has happened twice since we bought our villa. Last time was three years ago. The rain came down so quick flooded all the fields. Water ran down the street with all the sewage ended up in our garden which was flooded with sewage going into the pool it was a nightmare. We had to fly over to clean up. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen.

I've been told Spanish TV is broadcasting warnings every 15 minutes...so I don't think this one is a false alarm.

Gota Fria weather Warning now issued by Spanish weather agencies, as below:
Please please take notice, a Gota Fria Alert has been issued by the Spanish Met office. A gota fria is not huge amounts of rain like a lot of people think. It's lumps of ice falling from the sky.
The situation is now deepening,
AEmet has issued a special warning for later in the week for a possible Gota Fria, for those of you who have not experienced the phenomenon,
This situation could become very dangerous from wednesday thru Friday,
Take great care and heed any civil warnings,
If this situation evolves we can expect very heavy rains along the coast during this period with possible life threatening weather.
We will keep a very close eye on this situation and keep you informed.
This is from the costa blanca weather report on Facebook but its been issues by Spanish met office
If you need to sort your windows out please do it you only have another 72 hours to sort things if this hits us.
Please share this info to your friends and the people who can't get out, anyone who can't get out and needs food please ask friends. There making this a life threatening situation

Sounds serious - Take care everyone and don't go out in cars even if it seems ok at the time, it's not worth it. Our friend in Murcia, last year, popped out in his car to get some shopping and got caught in sudden heavy rains and his car started to wash away in a flash flood with him in it. Luckily some people managed to help him get out of his car just before it was washed away down a hill. That was in a heavy Land Rover so a smaller car would have had even more of a problem.
Sounds like time for sand-bags (if possible) and staying inside with a good DVD!

The Spanish met office are barking up the wrong tree. You cannot have a Gota Fria in August as there is no artic air in the Mediterranean. However because of the state of the atmosphere at 30, 000 Ft heavy thunderstorms do seem very likely through Wednesday and Thursday, clearing away Friday morning. What we have is an active 30,000 ft trough similar to the end of last September but nowhere as severe. Don't worry heavy rain yes but Gota Fria NO.

I thought so mike - It did seem considerably early for a Gota Fria!

However the weather warning for heavy thunderstorms is still something to take seriously, due to the possibility of flooding which can happen any time of year and with the hard summer sun-baked soil it is no doubt more of a worry.
