Cleaning Ovens
Cleaning Ovens

Well, this is going to be an interesting thread for a rainy day (not).
Where, or what, is the best thing for cleaning ovens? We have an Electrolux self cleaning oven which gets up to 500C when cleaning. When we first used it, it burned out the heating elements and, luckily, was under warranty so got them replaced free. The engineer said not to use the self cleaning system.
The book also says don't use acid type oven cleaners. Well, I've tried those spray foam ones (Magic Oven, Grill Doctor, Super 7 and most others from Spanish shops and the ones that sell British stuff). Even that stuff you put in plastic bags and leave overnight - seemed to work on the trays but not on the actual oven. Nope, none of them seem to work and certainly not as well as the adverts proclaim. Seems to just loosen some of it. It's then back to wire wool and Brillo pads but not sure if these would take the lining off the oven parts and damage them. Good for the stainless steel parts but not so good for the main bits.
Anything anyone tried that seems to do the job without taking hours and removing half the skin on your fingers when scouring?
(Yeah, I know, don't leave it so long between cleans so it doesn't get dirty but I do have a life (or what's left of it)).
Maybe I'll get one of those professionals around and then eat out in future.

Try baking soda and vinegar, it does work at long as it's not really bad. Suppose you've given that a go?

I tried the lemon juice and vinegar. Put it in the oven (as recommended by someone) and put the oven on but didn't seem to do much good. I'll try the baking soda bit. I assume you mix it with the vinegar to form a paste?
Now, it's not that bad. I give it a really good go every couple of months (and wipe it down regularly) it's just that it seems to stick and using the wire wool bit might damage the surface.

I did make a paste and it seems to work OK. My previous oven, I ruined it using a steel scrub thing (those round wire balls). My friend, once she's cleaned her oven then coats it with barcarbonate of soda mixed with water I think, leaves it on and every couple of weeks just wipes it off and it's as clean as a whistle but you've got to get it clean first!

In the UK there are small one man firms with a van who can visit and clean the oven for you. They remove all the removable bits and put them in a liquid in the back of their van then clean the main body of the oven then reassemble. We have ours done a couple of times a year depending on use.....takes about 1 - 1.5 hours & costs us about £50 a time.....they do a really great job.
Do they have such a thing in Spain ?

Hi Marcliff
Just seen yr post. I use a variation on the bicarbonate vinegar. On way out so will send exact recipe later. I have self cleaning oven liners but the glass door and floor get dirty. I too tried so many products and then found this particular bicarb one which works so well. I gave recipe on computer so will dig out when back.

I used Mr Muscle oven cleaner yesterday and waste of time but it did work on the glass door. I’ll try the vinegar/bicarb on the racks
