Gas fires and gas bottles

Gas fires and gas bottles

Postby Angelaandstuart » Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:04 am

Hi, we are going to buy a gas fire soon for the colder months But we are wondering where to get hold of full bottles of gas and also, we are confused about the fact that some bottles are different colours. How do you know which colour/ type of gas will be suitable for the fire purchased or do all gas fires happily cope with either colour of bottle?

Hi from what I remember the orange bottles are alot heavier then the silver ones and also orange ones are regulated by the government and they fix price that can be charged, silver ones differ in price.Look on forum for bottles there always somebody selling one, about €10.00 for empty one, there is one advertised now for that price.Once you have one most garages sell them just swap empty for full about €16.50 for a silver or for a few extra cents delivered to your door. Officially, you need a contract/permit when you buy a gas bottle. You can get these from outlets such as Don De or from the company supplying the gas and it means a new gas bottle (full) will cost about 50 euro.
However, most people avoid this by buying empty bottles from sites such as this. You will see lots of adverts for gas bottles for sale (empty) at around 10 euro. You then take the empty ones to a supplier who will exchange it for a full one for about 15 euro.

Different colours signify the different suppliers. Orange is Repsol and siliver is Cepsa. Repsol prices are state regulated but Cepsa isn't however the prices are similar.

The Cepsa silver bottles are aluminium and therefore about a third or more lighter then the orange Repsol ones.
All gas fires can use either.

The majority use Butane gas as opposed to Propane. Propane is supposed to be better at low temperatures but we are talking zero and below here so doesn't really apply. It's also supposed to give a stronger flame but, to be honest, I haven't noticed any difference on my BBQ so I stick to Butane as it's easier to get and it's cheaper.
