Pork pies

Pork pies

Postby keithkwll » Fri Jul 08, 2022 3:28 pm

When in UK i enjoyed a good Pork pie and in the town where I lived there was an excellent butcher who produce different types of pie including my favourite a Game Pie.
When family used to visit they used to bring several varieties of pie but now after Brexit it is not allowed

Can anyone please recommend a good supplier of Pork Pies

I've must have tried just about every PP available in a radius of about 50km and the best I've found are the Melton Mowbray ones out of Iceland, they are the only ones with a decent amount of gelatin and a PP is nothing without that.

Have you tried any of the British Butchers
Reeves, Essex, Chop Shop, Pic n Pay, Wilby’s, Bells.
Also Baldwins and Hamiltons Bakeries.

There’s also The Rolling Pin, her pies are delicious, but I’m not sure if she does pork pies.

Essex I dont know but all of the above - yes.

Bells, now in San Isidro, were amongst the worst being devoid of gelatin and full of fresh air.

I use Chop Shop for loads of things but I would not recommend the pork pies very dry absolutely no gelatine it's such a shame we loved Pork Farm really nice hot water pastry also Marks and Spencers fantastic!

Baldwins at La Marquesa are very nice, better than Chop Shop. Haven’t tried others other than Melton Mowbray from Iceland

Cafe Almoradi in Almoradi he bakes his own and they are the best by far that I've tasted in Spain, the Rolling pin in Quesada does the best steak pies also home baked

Once tasted there's no going back when it comes to Melton Mowbray pork pies. Melton Mowbray pork pies have PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), if Iceland's pies are labelled as Melton Mowbray they will have been made in Melton Mowbray. We returned to Melton Mowbray last night, I think a walk to Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe might be on the cards this afternoon

Some retailers, The Food Company (Tesco) was one, sell Vale of Mowbray Pork Pies. Easy to be confused with Melton Mowbury Pork Pies but, they are made in Yorkshire and aren’t that good
