Real Ale

Real Ale

Postby vivmatt13 » Sat Oct 22, 2016 6:48 pm

I am enquiring about places (shops and bars) that sell and serve real ale. Lager, wine and gin are good for a week but my real guilty pleasure is a nice real British ale. Any help is mightily appreciated!! :D

I want to try the Fat Owl before Christmas - our nearest is De Bassi's, La Zenia (opposite Los Dolses CC), they brew German/Bavarian Wheat Beer on the premises.

Although we tend to associate Spanish beer with "lager" and get the same makes (Amstel, Cruzcampo, San Miguel and so on), Spain is going through a very large "craft" beer explosion. We went to Valencia recently and found a pub called "The Market" which is done out a bit like an Irish bar. There were the normal lagers but about 6 pumps with different craft beers. One tasted a bit like an IPA and others were darker than the normal lager we buy.
Supermarkets now stock loads of these craft beers which have a tangier and more bitter taste than the big brewery ones although the big breweries have jumped on the band wagon and are producing their more specialised ones. It's a bit more expensive than the regular stuff but, with some of them having an alcohol content of 7 or 8 per cent, they are worth experimenting with the odd one or two. I tried an Inedit made by Damm (I do like Estrella Damm) and you could definitely taste the bitter barley in it although with an orange taste as well. 4.8% alcohol.
Probably my favourite (though at 7% alcohol probably best not to have too many) was Ambar tres maltas. Definitely a bitter hop and barley taste. The prices vary a lot with a bottle of the tres maltas at 90 cents but a Cruz Campo reserva worked out at €2.50 for a small 33cl bottle.
Have a look next time you're in the supermarket. Consum has quite a good selection. Makes a change from the norm.
