Best place to buy a new modem?

Best place to buy a new modem?

Postby Gill2009 » Tue Jun 13, 2017 1:28 pm

Hi - my neighbour needs a new modem - any suggestions where to buy new "plug and play" type that I (with some computer knowledge) can set up for her?

I have told her it's not worth buying a used one as they are not that expensive these days.

So somewhere close to Quesada or I am going to Carrefour tomorrow so could pick one up there or close by as we have car.

Thanks in Advance

Is this a modem to use with a SIM card, like a MiFi type device?
If you're buying a replacement then you should ensure that it's not locked to a specific mobile provider, as getting it unlocked could be expensive.

Why does your neighbour need a new one?

Pete - hi - thanks (again - Humax working and recording like a dream).

Basically neighbour has d link modem router - she has broadband via Movistar - suddenly she loses everything - 2 tablets and a laptop.

Asking to reconnect - tried what she "thought" was her password (s) but not getting anywhere as her son from UK does all this when he visits once a year - but there was a book with information he'd written and his wifi password kept coming up as "authentication error" .

So modem (underneath) had no password but did say use: 192.168.1.1 to get into modem - so tried this on her tablet - as I have done this before a few times and thought I would be able to change / reset a new password but it wouldn't accept it. Not sure if that's because it's different in Spain / with Movistar?

So concluded a cheapish new modem router might be cheaper than trying to get a techie out from Movistar?

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Ps I have asked her to ring her son to see if he can remember the password and I have done a reset but without being able to access it - I am out of ideas !

Pete - just been on the dlink website and I think if I hard wire her laptop to the modem I can get in and reset it.
If that doesn't get her back on and her son can't remember the original password then it's back to buy a cheap modem router is probably the best option - thanks - Ian (using my wife's account as her iPad is faster than my huawei phone!!!!!)

Not sure how Movistar works, but you will probably find that the router is configured to work with their systems, and may even contain an individual username and password to allow the router to authenticate with the Movistar servers. So, just swapping the router for a new one almost certainly won't work.

Using a wired connection is the best option, if your laptop doesn't automatically pick-up an IP address in the 192.168.1.xxx range then either the laptop network settings are set to manually configured settings, or the router isn't acting as a DHCP server. Manully set-up the laptop with an IP address of 192.168.1.2 and a gateway and DNS server of 192.168.1.1

I know of at least one Spanish ISP that uses the account holders NIE number as the router password. If that doesn't work then maybe the Movistar account number or phone number are worth a try.
You could always google the make/model if the router to find the default username and password (often something simple like admin/password), doing a hard reset may set the router back to these defaults, but it may also lose any user specific settings, which could be needed to connect to Movistar's systems.

Ultimately, it might be worth getting in touch with Movistar and telling them about the problem. The dropouts might be caused by the router, or by a problem at their end. They'll probably send out a new router, especially if your neighbour starts talking about taking their business elsewhere.

Hope this helps, PM me if you need a bit more assistance.

Pete.
