Sky Box

Sky Box

Postby Willymuppet » Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:23 pm

Hi All,

Can anyone please advise.......................We are coming out at Easter and I have a Sky Box that I no longer use here in the UK. I was wondering, if I brought it out to Spain, could I use it as a satellite receiver and just have a satellite dish fitted? Would the box work, even though I no longer have a Sky account? (I still have my old Sky card in the box)

Thanks for any and all advice. :D

Yes this will work for free view channels as long as you have a dish. Minimum of 1.4 m I think?

We brought our Sky card, bought a box and dish here and continued to pay Sky in the UK. It's worked for 15 years... On no account tell them you are moving, because for reasons of copyright they are not officially allowed to do this. But, as we were told on the quiet, what they don't officially know about - and they are paid...they don't care.

The old card is worthless so chuck it as it serves no purpose unless you are going to reactivate it & do like drama queen ;)

The card is NOT worthless, my parents have been here 10 years and I have been here 2 and half and using old cards that are not activated and they unscramble the the free view channels.

I wondered the same myself recently, so went and tested.

Old card defaults to freesat from Sky card will open the following in Spain. Can take a little while to fire up if dormant for a while. I've been told 2-3 days some have reported sometimes, though can't verify 100% as not seen myself. Below Freesat from Sky - white card, with no subscription.

157 Sony Entertainment
181 Sony Entertainment +1
323 Sony Movie Channel
324 Sony Movie Channel +1
360 4 Music
447 Motors TV UK
538 Yesterday +1

Not exactly worthless, though not far from it - having said that, a few extra channels for £10 of Sky card is not terrible. Suspect you can get this working on a non Sky box too, such as one of the GI models with a little software (though newer cards / sports / films, you cannot).

As for using Sky in Spain, officially.

You can use a multiroom box (I do) - but if caught Sky will charge you. I've never had any issues using parents box from UK. When originally installed, we told Sky we were not going to connect to phone line as kids room and didn't want erroneous charges appearing.

For those who do not have friends or family to get a multiroom box and subscription from the UK, it is also possible to obtain box, card & subscription without UK address, we just need to give a UK agent a little extra money - for the hand holding services, with clients having no address or UK bank account & that is without the myriad of other ways of getting Sky.

If you need a dish fitting, that is what we have been doing (amongst a few other related things) locally and legally for the last 10 years.
