How anyone got an experience of the Easter Parades in area?

Postby Alisunshines » Mon Mar 30, 2015 3:41 pm

My mum is coming out to Spain to see how they celebrate Easter, I have seen from the listings that there are various processions going on in all the local towns. I was thinking that maybe the Solemn procession on Good Friday in the evening at either Los Montesinos or Guardamar may be one to experience. Has anyone got any experience of this or any better suggestions and can anyone recommend the best place to stand to see the procession. Many Thanks

All the local processions are good and I would agree with Dot about Los Montesinos, as it is a smaller more intimate town than Guardamar, it may be a bit nicer, although Guardamar and Los Montesinos are both traditional Spanish towns.

As to where to stand, it's best to get there early as standing can be tiring - There are usually chairs put out by the local people or council and they do charge during the evening for them but if you want to take some fold up chairs and get there early enough you may find a space to put your chair somewhere near the front of the procession route. Sometimes you can find a low wall to sit on - we have often seen people take cushions as well.

Also remember snacks and drinks as it can be a long evening.

There are often no public toilets provided (I never understand why!!) but there are usually some bars open where you can get a drink and use the loo but this can be difficult during the actual parade if you don't want to lose your place. I personally find this the only downside to these wonderful events - Anyone have any ideas on this? - I could not find a loo at the last fiesta in Rojales and walked around while my husband stayed in our position to watch the parade. To walk in a bar, get a drink, just to use the loo was not something I felt I could do on my own. Would love to know what others do?

Don't let that put you off though. They are spectacular - Have a great time!

The local bars in Los Montesinos at the square dont really mind you using the loo we have lunch there a lot and often see people wandering in ,as its opposite the church good place to sit and soak up the atmosphere,

That's good to know as some places can be really funny about people coming in just to use the loo. I have no problems buying a drink normally, if we need the toilet, but with the Fiestas it's a bit more difficult as I said above.

Thank you everyone for your replies but where in Los Montesinos is the procession, is it in the main square?

It is a relatively small town and the silent procession on Thursday 2nd April at 22:15hrs is planned to go from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (marked in red on the map) and then through the roads La Marquesa, S. Miguel, Avda. del Mar, S. Lucas, La Marquesa, then finishing at the church square. Anywhere you sit or stand on the route you will see the whole procession.

This map link below should help but the route will, no doubt, be lined with seating and people, even quite early, so it's usually easy to see where it will go - The times of processions are just a guide as they tend to be a bit of a law unto themselves, so expect to wait around quite a while and if it's on time it's a bonus!

Torrevieja has by far the best Easter Parades from Monday to Friday. A late night. Very busy but worth it. Have a meal beforehand. Get there early. Never had trouble using the toilets in Bars anywhere. Never bought a drink either. Same in France.

Ifyou are going to Montesinos Friday night is best, if possible stand on the steps of the town hall facing the church it is worth being a little early to see the procession start. It is possible to follow it around the town but if you stand on the square the procession will pass alongsde centro cafe to the church towards the end. Sunday morning is another good time to go into Montesinos about 10am the main streets are closed and decorated with plants and flowers on the road the prossesion leaves the church up to the main road and turns left for a couple of hundred yards somewhere near to the supermarket where there is a small re-actment then after some fireworks return to the church. Last year I felt so welcome and proud to take part but unfortunatly due health problems I am unable to take part again this year,

Hi,

There are parades on in most of the surrounding towns nearly every night this week. Torrevieja is probably the largest unless you wish to travel further afield to Orihuela. The main parade in Torrevieja is on Friday commencing at 2000hrs. and will have approximately 15 Pasos being carried/wheeled around the streets by Costeleros. The largest Paso (float) is carried by The International Cofradia (made up of mainly British with a few other nationalities) and features Jesus in the garden of olives. This Paso requires 100 Costaleros to lift and carry and I´m looking forward to carrying for my 6th year. You will enjoy this but please get there early to park and there is no problem in the local bars if you wish to use the toilet.
