Health Query
by DaisyDoo2 » Sun Apr 23, 2017 9:11 am
My partner and I have just bought a place in Dona Pepa and are seriously thinking of coming over to live permanently. The problem is he is on lots of tablets every day and has just been diagnosed with Smouldering Myeloma so is still under investigation for that. We would wait til that has been sorted but to be honest it will still mean lots of trips to hospital/GP for blood tests, etc. Is this covered by the EHC card or do we have to take out a medical health care plan or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure that there are lots of people who know much more about this than me, but I do know that the answer will depend on your partner's age.
If you could share that piece of info then I think the answers you get will be of more use to you.
The EHIC card is only for people visiting Spain, once you become a resident it can't be used.
Pete.

Yes the EHIC card can be used while visiting Spain but it is only for emergencies and medically necessary treatment that can't wait and a diagnosed condition may not be covered unless there was an urgency/emergency with that condition while on holiday (as far as I know)

At 67 he should be able to obtain an S11 from the uk overseas pensions office and then be able to get an SIP card here and therefore obtain full coverage under the Spanish NHS
I think based on his current medical state then private medical insurance would be difficult as they prefer people to be in perfect health before insuring them
I think you need to be living here to get an SIP and on the padron and have your NIE number

I think this answer just about covers the question. You can sort out the S11 over the phone with the pension office and you should do so ASAP as getting a SIP card takes time and needed to prove eligibility for free or low cost prescriptions etc. S11 entitles your husband to medical care here paid by the NHS based on nat ins he paid in UK. I think they need a Spanish address to send it to, maybe your lawyer or a friend for example. But be aware getting the NIE number and SIP does take time though you can get a temporary SIP

Sending pills through the post
by peepops » Wed Nov 15, 2017 9:07 am
My husband is on medication for an irregular heart beat. We have the SIP cards but one of his tablets which is Apixaban is not covered and would cost €90 per month. We are here for 6 months so quite expensive. He uses a repeat prescription back in Scotland so we could get these posted out to us. My question is has anyone sent tablets through the post.

Peepops, I have a repeat prescription and asked the doctor for 6 months supply for an extended holiday so brought 6 months supply out without any problems. Is there any reason you could not perhaps do the same.?
