Wiring a ceiling fan (What colour is the live wire?)

Wiring a ceiling fan (What colour is the live wire?)

Postby jda78 » Mon Jun 27, 2016 6:51 am

A bit confused over the colours of the wires from the ceiling when coming to fit a fan. The three wires in the ceiling are blue, whiteish grey, and green. Obviously the green is the earth wire but which colour is 'live'
I assumed the whiteish grey wire was the 'live' but on the instructions for the fan itself referring to the wires in the fan it states that the white wire is the neutral and the blue live. So it would appear to be correct to connect blue to blue and whiteish/grey to white. Anyone else come aross this or can advise. Thank you.

Sounds like you are heading for a shock get a qualified electrician to fit it before you cause a fire

Connect earth to earth. Neutral and live can be anyway round.

Thanks very much. I am not a novice to electrical work having done much in the Uk. It was the greyish wire from the ceiling that was confusing as it did not 'match' the instructions on the fan itself. For information purposes to others, the greyish wire from the ceiling in my case was the "live". I borrowed a tester to confirm this having left mine in UK. Have asked others who have fitted a fan since and they all connected the greyish wire as being the live.

Yes, green wire is always earth, but they don't seem to worry which of the blue or black is live.
All circuits are protected by circuit breakers which isolate both instantly if there is a fault.

Shouldn't really do it yourself, please use a locally accredited electrician as if you do have a fire you might have a problem with your insurance.
I don't think we should ever encourage people to do their own wiring on this forum
